4Review
- God and Israel entered into a covenant
- God called Moses to come to Him on the mountain
that He might give him the Law written on tablets
of stone - Aaron Hur were left in charge
5Exodus 2416-18
Now the glory of the LORD rested on Mount Sinai,
and the cloud covered it six days. And on the
seventh day He called to Moses out of the midst
of the cloud. The sight of the glory of the LORD
was like a consuming fire on the top of the
mountain in the eyes of the children of
Israel. So Moses went into the midst of the cloud
and went up into the mountain. And Moses was on
the mountain forty days and forty nights.
6Notes
- Chapters 25-31 give a portion of the information
Moses received in the 40 days nights he was on
the mountain. -
- We will skip these chapters for now and proceed
to Chapter 32 where we find Israel breaking their
covenant with God. - We have seen the making of the covenant, now we
will see the breaking renewing of the covenant
7Covenant Broken
- Moses had been gone for many days
- The people did not know what had become of him
- They came to Aaron
8Covenant Broken
- The people asked for a god
- They gave Aaron their gold earrings
- He fashioned a golden calf
9Covenant Broken
- Israel proclaimed the gold calf to be their god
who brought them out of Egypt - Aaron built an altar
- The people offered sacrifices to this idol
- They celebrated with singing dancing
10Covenant Broken
- God commanded Moses to get down from the mountain
- He told Moses of Israels disobedience
- The LORD was very angry
11Exodus 327-10
And the LORD said to Moses, "I have seen this
people, and indeed it is a stiff-necked people!
Now therefore, let Me alone, that My wrath
may burn hot against them and I may consume
them. And I will make of you a great nation."
12Covenant Broken
- Moses pleaded with God
- Said the Egyptians would say He brought Israel
out to destroy them - Reminded God of His promise to Abraham, Isaac,
Jacob - God relented
13Covenant Broken
- When Moses came off the mountain
- He was angered at the sight of the calf
- He threw the tablets down and broke them
- He confronted Aaron
14 Exodus 3222-23
So Aaron said, "Do not let the anger of my lord
become hot. You know the people, that they
are set on evil. For they said to me, 'Make us
gods that shall go before us as for this Moses,
the man who brought us out of the land of Egypt,
we do not know what has become of him.'
15Covenant Broken
- Moses stood at the gate of the camp
- He called everyone who was on Gods side to come
to him - All the sons of Levi gathered
- Moses spoke to them
16 Exodus 3227-28
And he said to them, "Thus says the LORD God of
Israel 'Let every man put his sword on his side,
and go in and out from entrance to
entrance throughout the camp, and let every man
kill his brother, every man his companion, and
every man his neighbor.'" So the sons of Levi did
according to the word of Moses. And about
three thousand men of the people fell that day.
17 Covenant Renewed
- The next morning Moses told Israel
- they had sinned a great sin
- he would petition God on their behalf
-
18 Exodus 3231-32
Then Moses returned to the LORD and said, "Oh,
these people have committed a great sin, and
have made for themselves a god of gold! Yet now,
if You will forgive their sin but if not, I
pray, blot me out of Your book which You have
written."
19Covenant Renewed
- God heard Moses supplication on behalf of the
people of Israel -
- He replied to Moses
20 Exodus 3233-35
And the LORD said to Moses, "Whoever has sinned
against Me, I will blot him out of My book. Now
therefore, go, lead the people to the place of
which I have spoken to you. Behold, My Angel
shall go before you. Nevertheless, in the day
when I visit for punishment, I will visit
punishment upon them for their sin." So the LORD
plagued the people because of what they did with
the calf which Aaron made.
21Covenant Renewed
- God continued His reply to Moses
- Israel would continue to the promised land
- God, however, would not go in their midst
- Instead His angel would go with them
22 Exodus 334-6
And when the people heard this bad news, they
mourned, and no one put on his ornaments. For the
LORD had said to Moses,"Say to the children of
Israel, 'You are a stiff-necked people. I could
come up into your midst in one moment and consume
you. Now therefore, take off your ornaments, that
I may know what to do to you.'" So the children
of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments
by Mount Horeb.
23Covenant Renewed
- Moses set up a tent of meeting outside the camp
- He petitioned God to consider Israel His own
nation again - God agreed to go with them
- He told Moses to bring two tablets of stone and
come to Mt. Sinai
24Covenant Renewed
- The LORD descended upon the mountain in a cloud
- He proclaimed Himself to Moses as merciful,
gracious, long suffering - He clarified that He would not clear the guilty
25Covenant Renewed
- God renewed His covenant with Israel
- He promised to drive out the Amorite, Canaanite,
Hittite, Perizzite, Hivite, Jebusite from the
land - He told them not to make covenants with the
inhabitants of the land - They were to destroy all altars images
26Covenant Renewed
- Moses was on Mt. Sinai for 40 days 40 nights
- He did not eat or drink
- God wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant
27Covenant Renewed
- Moses finally descended with the tablets
- His face shone because God had been speaking to
him - The people were frightened
- Moses told Israel all God had said
- Afterwards, he put a veil over his face
28Review of Gods Covenant
- God offered to make a covenant w/Israel (193-6)
- Israel promised to keep all Gods commandments
(197-8) - God spoke to Israel and gave them the 10

commanded (2019) - God gave His instruction to Moses (20-23)
- The covenant was ratified by both God and Israel
and for the 3rd time Israel promised to obey all
God commanded (241-11) - Less than 6 weeks later, the people had Aaron
make a golden calf and broke their covenant with
God (321-6, 15-20)

- Moses interceded (3211-14, 30-35)
