Title: Basic Introduction to RtI

1
Basic Introduction to RtI
  • Sharlene Montgomery

2
What is RtI
  • Response to Intervention (RtI) is the practice
    of providing
  • high-quality instruction/intervention matched to
    student needs
  • 2) using learning rate over time and level of
    performance to
  • 3) make important educational decisions
    (Batsche, et al., 2005).

3
What does that mean?
  • This means using
  • differentiated instructional strategies for all
    learners
  • providing all learners with scientific,
    research-based interventions
  • continuously measuring student performance using
    scientifically research-based progress monitoring
    instruments for all learners
  • making educational decisions based on a students
    response to interventions

4
RtI Three Tier Model
5
Tier 1
  • Students that are positively responding to the
    core curriculum
  • Students have a full course load

6
Tier 3
  • Special Ed Students that need intensive
    interventions for success
  • Focus on very few courses

7
Tier 2
  • Gifford Street Students
  • These students are not eligible for SpEd, but
they need supplemental instruction because they
had a poor response to the core curriculum
  • Focus only on core courses
  • Interventions put in place in the hopes that the
students will return to Tier 1

8
Where do we begin?
  • An RtI team (Yeah, Jerry, another committee!)
    should set the foundation
  • What should the academic focus be on?
  • What specific research-based strategies and
    instructional methods will be used?
  • What specific research-based assessment tools
    will be used?
  • SIP has begun to address these issues on an
informal basis. It is up to the administration
if RtI will become a SIP responsibility or that
    of another committee.

9
How does that affect the teachers?
  • Interventions
  • When our instruction does not work for a student
we will have to employ additional interventions,
    which should be documented.

10
How does that affect the teachers?
  • Assessment
  • We will have to track student achievement in
    response to our interventions.

11
Why should we know this?
  • RtI is included in federal and state LAWS

12
Federal Law
  • IDEIA 2004 includes language that creates
    guidelines for identifying SpEd students
  • but we must remember that RtI is NOT a SpEd
programit is for the gen. pop.

13
State Law
  • Illinois Administrative Code Section 226. 130,
    subsection (b) states
  • each district shall, no later than the
beginning 2010-2011 school year, implement the
use of a process that determines how the child
    responds to scientific, research-based
interventions as part of the evaluation
    procedure

14
  • RtI is that process!
  • Learn it now instead of letting it sneak up on
    you in 2010!
