2Objectives Met Through This Lesson
3Lets Learn About Addition!
4Lets begin with a simple review of counting.
5How many blue shapes are there?
6 1 2 3
Good! There are 3 shapes. Now, how many orange
shapes do you see below?
71
2
Great! There are two orange shapes. But how can
we find out how many shapes are there all
together?
8Yes, we could go back and count all of them over
again. . . . .

5
9But that takes time. Theres a quicker way. . .
10Its called adding, and its like counting on
from a number.
11Lets look at these coins for another
example. There are 5 quarters. Keep the number 5
in your head.
12There are also 4 pennies. Lets count on from 5
four times.
1 2 3 4
13Five is in our heads 6, 7, 8, 9! We just counted
on four more to five. We end up on the number 9.
14In other words, 5 coins add 4 coins gives us 9
coins in all.
15However, we dont always say add. Sometimes we
say plus. Also, we dont always say gives us.
We can say equals instead.
16So we could say, Five plus four equals nine.
17When we write down addition facts, we write them
like this. . . .
5 4
9
18Or, like this. . . . .
5
4
9
19The is called a plus sign. Its a sign that
tells us to add. The or the _____ at the end
of the problems are called the equal signs. They
tell us that the answer is coming up next.

20Why do we need to learn addition anyway?
It helps us count money.
It helps us know how much stuff we have.
Many neat jobs use addition skills.
It helps us do other types of math.
21Now we will take a moment to do some problems at
our desks using two-color counters.
Click on the Word Document Links below to see
some problems I would like for you to solve. The
first link is only an example.

22Now, turn to your partner and tell them one thing
you learned about addition today.
Here are some web links we can look at for more
