Christianity and Medieval society
  • By Kimberly Lopez

2
The church shapes politics and society.
  • clergy-church officials- very influential people
in medieval time- European culture and politics .
  • society-everything took place at the church-
    Pilgrims visited religious places.
  • politics- church officials often became
    political advisers to local rulers.

3
Monks and Friars
4
The monks of Cluny
  • Religious order- the monks established a new
religious order. They dedicated their lives to
    religion with common rules.
  • Living apart from society- monks lived apart
from society. 2 new religious orders developed
from for those who wanted to live and teach among
    people.

5
Friars
  • Francis of Assisi- founder of the Franciscan
    order.
  • friars- members of religious orders who lived and
    worked among the general public
  • Living within the society- friars lived and
    taught among people.

Universities are built

showed how religious faith and reason could
    co-exist.
  • Created by religious leaders- scholars wanted to
establish a connection between religious faith
    and intellectual reason.
  • there was similarities of schools then and now
like they both teach law, medicine, and
philosophy, also they took test then and now.

The church and the arts
8
Religious architecture
  • Inspired by religious expressions- the spires and
high ceilings and colorful stained glass windows
are all designed to bring people closer to God.

9
Magna Carta causes changes in England
10
Magna Carta
  • The Magna Carta is a document written by English
nobles and signed by King John listing rights the
king could not ignore. The nobles demanded the
    agreement.
  • This became a key principle of English government
and an important step in the development of
    democracy.

11
Effects of Magna Carta
  • The effects of the Magna Carta was that it gave
rights to the people of Rome that no one could be
kept in jail without reason, and even the king
must obey the law. Also, it faced with financial
troubles, the kings turned to a council of nobles
    for advice and money.

12
3 of the demands
  • (1.) a group of English nobles decided to force
the king to respect their rights.
  • (2.)they made King John approve a document
listing rights the king could not ignore.
  • (3.) no one to be kept in jail without a reason,
and even the king must obey.

13
Changes after Magna Carta
14
Magna Carta inspired
  • The Magna Carta inspired the nobles to develop
into Parliament, the law making body that governs
    England today.

15
Parliament
  • The kings turned to a council of nobles for money
and advice about war and financial problems .
Before long, the council developed into a
parliament, the lawmaking body that still governs
    England today.

16
King limit Magna Carta
  • In Europe, kings were not giving up their power
easily, but other events forced political change.
A major event was the Hundred Years War.

17
My made-up Magna Carta
  • 3 demands I seek in our class
  • (1.) freedom of speech
  • (2.) all human-beings treated equally
  • (3.)not to be punished without a reason

18
The hundred years war
19
The course of the war
  • The hundred years war begins when an English
king tried to take control of Frances throne. A
Frenchmen and an English were claiming that they
were the rightful king of France. They then went
to war. England won many key battles until a
teenage peasant girl, Joan of Arc, rallied the
    French troops.

20
Results of the war
  • The French eventually won the war, but the
English had caught Joan of Arc and killed her.
  • In England, the war helped increase the power of
Parliament because the king needed Parliament's
approval to raise money to pay for the war.
  • In France ,the kings power grew after the war.

21
Black death
22
Black death
  • The black death plague disease originally came
from central and eastern Asia. Traders
unknowingly brought rats carrying disease to
Mediterranean ports. Fleas that fed on infected
rats passed on the plague to people. And, it
quickly swept throughout much of Europe.

23
The cause of the plague
  • This plague caused perhaps 25 million people
to die. The survivors of the plague found their
skills in demand and charged more for their
labor. Feudalism was starting to not be used
because the peasants no longer worked for the
rich, now they had other job opportunities.
