Cars

• Nitrogen oxides that are released from cars can
  form nitric acid when in contact with water in
  the atmosphere.
• Catalytic converters in cars trap these molecules
  and rip them apart leaving plain nitrogen to be
  released.

Factories

• Since the sulfur dioxide released from factories
  can turn to sulfurous acid when it comes in
  contact with water in the atmosphere, one way to
  reduce acid rain is to introduce the water before
  the sulfur dioxide ever leaves the factory.
• This is done by a wet scrubber.

• A wet scrubber sprays the exhaust air with water
  before it leaves.
• Liquid Sulfurous acid forms and falls into
  collection bins.
• The air that is released has much of the sulfur
  dioxide removed.

• Electrostatic precipitators- charge the molecules
  in exhaust and attract them to an electrode.
• Filters-filter that filter out particles are
  cheaper then filter that filter out gas.

Raising the pH of Lakes

• Lime (calcium hydroxide) is dumped into lakes to
  raise the pH.
• Lime can also be tilled into soil to raise the pH
  of the soil.
