Stay safe by following the fireworks code of
practice

Fireworks code

• Only buy fireworks marked BS 7114.
• Dont drink alcohol if setting off fireworks.
• Keep fireworks in a closed box.
• Follow the instructions on each firework.
• Light them at arms length, using a taper.
• Stand well back.
• Never go near a firework that has been lit. Even
  if it hasnt gone off, it could still explode.

• Never put fireworks in your pocket or throw them.
• Always supervise children around fireworks.
• Light sparklers one at a time and wear gloves.
• Never give sparklers to a child under five.
• Keep pets indoors.
• Dont set off noisy fireworks late at night and
  never after 11pm.

• Most frequently involve hands and fingers (26),
• Eyes (21), and the
• Head and face (18).

• More than half of the injuries are burns (63)
• Contusions and Lacerations were the second most
  frequent injuries (18).

Case Study

• 13 year old girl.
• Back seat passenger in a car.
• Firework was set off outside.
• Firework shattered glass in back and hit her on
  the head.
• She was rushed to hospital
• On admittance she was unconscious

• Day 6 confirmed brain death
• Day 15 13 year old girl dies as a result of her
  injuries received
