Proposal Generated in response to ITT Impact
of Small Missions on Earth Observation Ground
Segment Systems (SMOG) ESA AO/1-3879/I-SB
6SMOG Background
- New trends in EO missions oriented towards small
satellite missions concept - satellites in cluster configuration -gt less
revisit time - less sensors per satellite and more specific -gt
user oriented - sensors with higher resolution -gt higher data
rate - ESA request for a definition of new and generic
GS data acquisition and processing facility (AGF)
to face new EO missions efficiently - providing a core of required functions
- avoiding development of a new GS facility each
time a new satellite mission is born - enabling the possibility to accommodate new
mission specific functions without impacting in
core AGF functions/architecture
7SMOG Project major objectives (I)
- To define a generic architecture, applicable to
the Ground Segment of the Earth Observation Small
Missions. - To define a generic Advanced Ground Facility,
AGF, as a basic node of the future ground
segment.
8SMOG Project major objectives (I)
- Convincing definition of a future generic AGF
able to cope with requirements of new EO small
mission concepts - Design of AGF constrained by budget recurrent
cost lt 500 k. - Validation of AGF concept by defining and
implementing an AGF prototype - functionally representative of overall AGF
requested functions - meeting partially the requirements reduced
performances w.r.t. that defined for generic AGF
9SMOG AGF Design Drivers (II)
- Overall recurring costs lt 500 k
- Limit the development / manufacturing
- Use of recurrent parts
- Maximum use of COTS
- Modular design to allow for ease adaptability and
expandability - Simple operation concept from user point of view
- autonomous minimum exchanges with mission
centers - automated
10SMOG AGF Design Drivers (II)
- SW architecture as independent as possible from
HW architecture performances of system only
dependant of available budget for HW. - Fast product delivery ground networks
- Use of Industry standards to have an open
architecture
11- Modular design of the AGF
- A basic AGF core designed
- Its functionality can be improved by adding new
modules - Flexible design of the AGF
- Support to generic missions e.g. TM Acquisition,
Archive, catalogue - Specific details for each specific mission have
to be implemented, e.g. Data Processing
