1Troop 8 Bridge Competition Getting Started
- Download program from either
- The Troop 8 web site (www.bsa-troop8.com) or the
West Point Bridge site (http//bridgecontest.usma.
edu) - There are two versions of software one for XP
and one for W95, W98, ME, and 2000 - Install the Setup7x.exe (XP) file or the
Setup7.exe file (all other Windows operating
system) on your computer - Major changes this year
- We will have a Local Contest similar to what we
did last year. However, we have some changes as
noted later. - You may also enter the National Contest. Details
provided at a later date. For the Local Contest,
we have decided to use Load Cade B with Bridge
Configuration 1.
2Local Contest
- Mr. Long has requested a Local Contest code from
West Point. See later slide for the code. - The Local Contest code will be entered in the
software. Entering the code will restrict you to
the bridge design decided at Troop Meeting on 25
Nov 07 - Load Class B
- Bridge Design 1 (Standard Abutments with a 24m
Deck Height and 44m Span Length) - Having a Local Contest code allows us to upload
bridge designs to the West Point web site where
you can see your ranking in comparison to others
in the troop. - As last year, the winner will be determined by
who has the lowest cost and allows the load to
cross the bridge.
3Registering for the Local Contest
- Once you have the Local Contest code, you must
register on the West Point Bridge web site. - Go to http//bridgecontest.usma.edu
- Hit the Register and Log In Tab
- Enter the requested information
- Enter the Local Contest code (BSC01B)
- You may enter as a team of two or as an individual
- Once you register as a Local Contestant, you are
automatically entered as a National Contestant.
Bridge designs that you submit for the Local
Contest will be automatically entered in the
National Contest.
4Troop 8 Bridge Competition
- After installing the program, open the West Point
Designer 2007 program. - You will see an opening splash screen and a tip
of the day box. Close the tip of the day. You
will see the following screen - You may open a previously saved design or start a
new design. Press OK.

- Enter the following
- Entering the local code will set the Load Case
and the Bridge Configuration.
Choose Yes

- Do not change any items on this page. They are
set by the Local Contest code. If you change them
and submit a bridge design, it will be rejected
by the web site.

- You may choose a template or design your own
(i.e. none).

- Enter your name and project number select a
number.

12Troop 8 Bridge Local Contest Competition
- All files will be uploaded to the West Point
Bridge site. Files uploaded to the local site
will also be entered in the National Competition. - Local Contest files are uploaded to
http//bridgecontest.usma.edu/index.htm where you
have to login with your username and password.
After logging in, you will be give anoption to
upload your design. - Standings can be checked by going to
http//bridgecontest.usma.edu/standings/local/BSC0
1B.htm where BSC01B is the Local Contest Number. - You will see some files with the name gc_long.
That is Mr. Long, but he is not competing against
you.
13Troop 8 Bridge Local Contest Competition
- Collaboration is permitted.
- Send e-mail to Mr. Long (gc_long_at_bellsouth.net)
if you have questions. - The person or team with the most economical
bridge that holds the truck will win. - There are no National Prizes other than competing
against the rest of the country. Actually, you
compete against your region - which is the
Southeast. - Local Contest There will be a 1st Place, 2nd
Place, and 3rd Place Prize. Cutoff for the local
contest is Mar 9th.
