The JMU Honor Code
Upon enrollment at JMU, each student is
automatically subject to the provisions of the
Honor System. Each student has a duty to become
familiar with the Honor Code and the provisions
of the Honor System. Ignorance of what
constitutes an Honor Code violation cannot be
used as a defense in an honor hearing.

  • The Honor Council is composed of approximately
    100 members including the following
  • The Honor Council President and V.P.
  • The Honor Council Coordinator
  • Three Student Investigators
  • Approximately 50 Faculty members
  • Approximately 40 Undergraduate students
  • Approximately 10 Graduate students

  • Using unauthorized materials or receiving
    unauthorized assistance.
  • Giving false or misleading information
  • Copying information from another student
  • Rendering unauthorized assistance to another
    student
  • Obtaining prior knowledge of examination
    materials
  • Selling or giving to another student unauthorized
    copies of an examination
  • Using a commercially prepared paper or research
    project
  • Falsifying or attempting to falsify class
    attendance records

  • Falsifying reasons why a student did not attend a
    required class or take an exam
  • Taking an exam in the place of another student
  • Making unauthorized changes in any reported grade

  • Using computing facilities in a dishonest manner
  • Falsifying evidence or influencing someone in
    connection with an honor violation investigation

pursuant to the Honor Code, and shall contain the
