  • A Peoples History

Key Terms
  • Ancestors - people that you are related to.
    People from your family tree that are from a
    previous generation.
  • Bannock - unleavened bread made from outmeal and
    corn, which was a staple of the Native diet.
  • Shaman - a priest or priestess who uses magiic
    for the purpose of curing the sick and
    controlling events.
  • Tepee - a cone shaped tent made from animal
    hides. This was used by the Natives of the
    Plains.
  • Vision Quest - a spiritual act taken on by a
    Native boy seeking spiritual power and to learn
    the identity of his guardian spirit. (Animal
    spirit)
  • Treaty - an agreement made by negotiation.
  • Tribe - a social group made up of different
    families and clans, which share a common
    heritage, language, culture and name.
  • Wigwam- the houses of the Natives of the Great
    Lakes region made from arched framework of poles
    overlaid with bark, mats, or hides
  • Wampum - beads of polished shells strung in
    strands, belts, or sashes and used by North
    American Natives as money, ceremonial pledges,
    and ornaments

  • Reserve - piece of land set aside for the sole
    use of a specific band of Natives.
  • Ritual - traditional pattern for performing a
    ceremony, particularly a religious one.

The Algonquin
Our first Native Group
  • Algonquin Tribes were Micmac, Malecite, Abnaki,
    Wampanoag, Mantuak, Delaware and Powhatan.
  • They lived along the Eastern Coast of North
    America.
  • They lived in the woodlans of this region.
  • About 100 people lived and worked in one village.
    They shared eveything and behaved like a large
    family.

Natives of the Plains
Our second Native Tribe
  • Some of the Plains tribes called themselves
    Sioux, Pawnee, Kiowa, Comanche, Assinboin, Plains
    Cree, and Blackfoot.
  • They lived in what is now known as Alberta,
    Saskatchewan, Western Manitoba and down into the
    United States, almost to the Gulf of Mexico.
  • The land they occupied was flat, without
    mountains or lake. There were only a few trees
    along the river banks.

Northern Forest Natives
Our third Native Group
  • This group of Natives moved across the
    northernmost part of North America, known today
    as Canada.
  • Some of these tribes were Kutchin, Hare,
    Yellowknife, Dogrib and Beaver.
  • Land - The western groups had the Rocky
    Mountains, the central groups had flat plains and
    the eastern groups had forests.
  • They were nomadic people by necessity,continuously
    moving in order to find food.

  • They lived in wigwams.
  • Beds were fur covered-platforms.
  • In the middle of the wigwam there was a fire pit
    used for cooking and warmth.

  • The Natives sat on the ground and slept on furs
    spread over the ground.

Northern Forest Natives

  • The type of home depended on the environment and
    the season.
  • Summer homes - were similar to the tepees of the
    Plains Natives.
  • Winter homes were similar to tepees, but the
    cracks were filled with dirt and moss.

Algonquin Food
Food
  • Spring - Women planted crops and gathered food.
    The main crops were corn, squash, pumpkins and
    beans.
  • Men began hunting in the Fall and Winter. Deer,
    bear, moose, beaver and wild turkey were the most
    popular.
  • Everything was used. Meat was eaten, furs and
    hides were used for clothing, bones were used for
    tools, guts and intestines were made into pouches.

Plains Natives
Food
  • Hunting was the main way that they got their
    food.
  • Their main prey was buffalo and they used the
    entire animal.
  • Hunting Tribes traded meat for vegetables with
    farming tribes.

  • Hunting and fishing were the main sources of
    food.
  • They followed migrating game or they left one
    hunting area before killing too many animals.
  • Caribou, moose, fish, rabbit and wolverine.
