Specific objectives of the course

• Elicit important cultural differences in
  cross-cultural consultation
• Recognise our own cultural influences
• Recognise cultural stereotypes and prejudices
• Understand the patients perceptions of
  professionals and health care systems
• Awareness of broader societal and media
  influences on patient/doctor perceptions of each
  other

Session IIntroduction

• Warm-up personal stories about cultural
  backgrounds with an example of one cultural
  experience that is typical e.g childhood
  experience, health belief...
• Group setup rules, including for role play
• Interactive briefing what is culture /
  diversity
• Set out plans for rest of course and homework
  esp. plans for role play

• detailed analysis of a consultation /
• video which has raised crosscultural issues
  either written and d/w supervisor, or
• debrief of video with mentor

Session II consultation skills for cross
cultural setting

• practising questioning skills
• Use role play with some key cultural issues and
  observe each other

Session IIIMedia and societal images do they
make us prejudiced?

• Warmup thinking more about positive and
  negative experiences of cultural issues in their
  OWN environment and family
• Plenary discuss these and create a list of ways
  in which diversity can be expressed
• Observe a video showing cultural
  misunderstandings in health care (? A humorous
  choice?)
• Discussion with expert panel of health workers
  who themselves have come from another background.
  Focus on their experiences of working in
  different cultures.

Session III(cont.)Media and societal images do

• Homework
• practise asking about the explanatory model of
  symptoms, concerns, fears and treatment already
  used in as many consultations as possible
  (cf.questionaire)
• bring learning to week 4.

Session IVThe patient perspective

• Bring a patient from their own clinic or have
  advocates for the communities present.
• Discuss experiences of answering the questions.
• Analyse some consultations on video (option)
• Homework on topics and presentations

Session VWhat have we learned?

• Residents presentations.
• Each pair does 10 minute presentation on the
  topic they chose and discuss.
• Further role play with more detailed assessment
  and feedback
• Final discussion and set action points for
  practice
