Title: Career Project

1
Career Project
  • A mini-research paper and presentation for ninth
    grade students.

2
Why conduct research?
  • The purpose of research is to gather information
    for a topic and/or issue.
  • Good research always has a clear purpose, topic,
    and audience(Delaware State Standards).

3
Why is research relevant to this project?
  • The purpose of this project is to have students
    research a career option.
  • Students are not writing a paper based upon
their own opinions, but rather an objective paper
that will help form and fulfill their future
    goals.

4 quick tips for effective research writing
  • 1. Research writing has a special format. You
will use either MLA(Modern Language Association)
    or APA(American Psychological Association)
formats. It is impossible to remember every
single detail of MLA or APA however, students
can access a handbook to help them format the
    paper correctly. (http//owl.english.purdue.edu/ow
    l/resource/557/01/)

4 quick tips(continued)
  • 2. Research papers never contain your opinion.
You should also refrain from using the following
pronouns I, me, my, our, we, and us. However,
since this project centers upon you evaluating
your skills and weaknesses, you will be allowed
to use I, my, and me.

6
4 quick tips(continued)
  • 3. A research paper should always have a works
cited page. This is the page that documents the
    sources that you quoted.
  • 4. Without internal documentation or a works
cited page, you are guilty of plagiarism.
Plagiarism is defined as the uncredited use
(both intentional and unintentional) of somebody
    else's words or ideas(Driscoll 1).

Getting started
  • If you had to choose a career today, then what
    would it be? Why?
  • Note You may not choose the following career
choices professional athlete or a rapper.
  • According to an article in Ebony magazine in
1998, studies found that one out of every 50,000
high students will ever be a part of a
    professional team(Leavy 1)!
  • You may choose to be a singer or an actor, but
you will go the route of most other actors and
    singers by attending college.
