bioss Biological Signalling in a new approach
Goals
Methods
Biological signalling processes are of
fundamental importance for the development and
maintenance of cells and cellular activities in
living organisms. Therefore, signalling studies
provide solutions to essential biological
questions and problems. For example the problem
of how to maintain stem cells in vivo and expand
them ex vivo will only be solved if we understand
and learn how to manipulate the signals that
regulate the proliferation and differentiation
programmes in cells. Furthermore, many human
diseases are caused by deregulation of
signalling, and a better understanding of these
processes will have a major impact on medical
research and practice. Bioss - the Centre of
Biological Signalling Studies in Freiburg will
investigate the key mechanisms of biological
signalling in a new, highly interdisciplinary and
cross-systems approach.

• Bioss is developing an interdisciplinary research
  programme comprising two analytical areas namely
  studying signalling processes inside (Research
  Area A) and between cells (Research Area B), a
  synthetical area (Reserach Area C) that tests the
  analytical results and models through rebuilding,
  an area for technical development (Research Area
  D) and technology and services (Area Z) that
  provides the essential tools for the first three
  areas.

• The biosstoolbox a central resource and
  information pool for biological material
  
• The biossincubator a fully equipped lab
  for our independent postdocs to foster a
  new generation of signalling scientists
• Dynamic programs for advancement of female
  scientists

• Initiation and promotion of analytical
  (dissecting) and synthetical (rebuilding)
  approaches in signalling research.
• Introduction of synthetic biology as a new
  research and teaching topic at the
  University of Freiburg.
• Establishing an internationally leading
  centre in signalling research by supporting
  innovative research and education
