historical evidence. - It adds the ability to analyze and use primary
and secondary source documents in your essay.
4- It allows you to interpret historical documents.
- Find contradictory evidence, bias, and point of
view in the documents. - You get to play the historian.
5Doing the DBQ
Step 1 Carefully read the question. Look at the
verbs. Decide everything the question calls for.
Spend some time doing this!
6Step 2 Divide the questions topic(s) into
categories. If they are included, great, if not,
improvise PERSIA, PES, PDESCI, RECIPES SPRITE,
DEPTH, etc.
7Step 3 Brainstorm, make a list of everything you
know that pertains to the question. Do this
before ever looking at the documents.
8Step 4 Carefully read the documents. Look for
- The author (and background)
- Bias, point of view, tone
- Counterarguments
- Change over time
9- Analyze the documents, find the essence of the
document. - Do NOT quote from the documents, however.
- Use them to support your thesis.
10You Must Cite Documents
- To do so
- Parenthetically after the idea (you borrowed),
cite the source by placing the source in
parenthesis, i.e (Doc A) (Doc B) - You should group documents, if they are
related, at least once (Docs A, B, C)
11- For non-verbal documents
- Interpret them (lots of outside information in
them). - Remember, the DBQ essay should have an equal mix
of document evidence and outside evidence.
Now you are ready to begin writing
