Program Description
  • Masters of Arts in Education/Teacher Education
    Programs
  • Elementary and Secondary teacher certification
  • 33-credit Masters Degree (MAED) program, leading
    to teacher licensure.
  • Candidates for this program
  • have already earned a bachelors degree
  • wish to gain the pedagogical skills,knowledge and
    certification that will assist them in becoming
    competent and effective educators
  • are interested in earning a degree.
  • Requires field experiences and student teaching
  • Program developed to meet NCATE standards

Program Standards
  • Designed and based on the work of Charlotte
    Danielson, NCATE, ISTE, INTASC and state
    standards
  • Provide a framework for student outcomes and
    course objectives
  • Program rubric and electronic portfolio designed
    using standards
  • Students must meet program standards to
    successfully complete the program

Calendars
  • Program takes approximately 14 months to complete
  • Student teaching can begin after 4th course if
    progression requirements are met

Certification
  • The MAED/TED program is a state approved program
    in Arizona. Students completing this program will
    be eligible for certification in the state of
    Arizona. Additionally,
  • Most states allow programs that are state
    approved to write Institutional Recommendations
    for certification within their state for students
    who successfully complete the program.
  • Students are advised, prior to enrollment, to
    verify eligibility for certification in their
    respective state.

No Child Left Behind
  • On January 8, 2002, President Bush signed H.R. 1,
    the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB).
  • H.R. 1 asks states to put a highly-qualified
    teacher in every public school classroom by 2005.
  • teachers demonstrating subject knowledge and
    skills in reading, writing, mathematics and other
    basic subject areas
  • No Child Left Behind (NCLB) emphasizes
    accountability and teaching methods that work. A
    large focus of this law is on reading achievement
  • NCLB covers all states, school districts, and
    schools that accept Title 1 federal grants. One
    way or another, this law covers all public
    schools in all states

Transition to Teaching Grant
  • The University of Phoenix was a recipient of a
    U.S. Department of Education "Transition to
    Teaching" grant for almost 3 million dollars.
  • This grant will provide UOP campuses in three
    states (AZ, HI and NV) the opportunity to enroll
    teachers (i.e., emergency certified teachers
    working in the respective school districts,
    recent college graduates and/or mid-career
    professionals) into our teacher education program
    (on-ground and online) to become certified to
    teach with a guaranteed teaching job
