Reclaiming WaterEXAMPLE PRESENTATION

Introduction Water Supply to the Coombsville Area
  • Due to overpopulation in the Coombsville area,
there has been a significant decline in the water
tables. A proposition has been made to reclaim
waste water and utilize it in that region.

1. Analysis / Diagnosis Outcome(s)
  • Outcome Over-taxing of the water supply
  • The water table has dropped in the Coombsville
    area.
  • Some individuals have to wait days for well water
    to rejuvenate.
  • Wells are failing in the Coombsville area because
of a proliferation of new vineyards and
    residences in recent decades.
  • (Napa Valley Register)
  • The water table has fallen as much as 120 feet
in a quarter century, the United States
    Geological Survey reported. (Napa Valley
    Register)
  • Residents have run out of water nine times in
the past two months and must wait three to four
days to shower, wash dishes and laundry.
  • Lianne Milton/Register

2. Analysis / Diagnosis Actions / Causes
  • Actions Overpopulation
  • Vineyard Growth
  • Resident Growth
  • Over the last 25 years the amount of ground
water pumped from beneath east Napa surged 80
percent. Most of it went to new vineyards.
  • Residents must conserve water due to a low
water table from new vineyards that draw most of
    the water.
  • Lianne Milton/Register

3. Analysis / Diagnosis Beliefs
  • Values Vinters Agriculture as an
    industry/lifestyle
  • - Residents reaction to the market
  • The Coombsville area is a beautiful setting in
which to live combining the rural lifestyle with
the benefits of a small city. As a result, the
area has experienced significant growth without
    regard to the ecological impact.

4. Summary Issue
  • Summary
  • The beliefs that Coombsville is a desirable
place to live, as well as grow vineyards, has
lead to the overpopulation of the area. This has
resulted in an over-use of the limited water
    supply.
  • Therefore a proposition has been made to fix
    the problem.

7
5. Prescription / Proposal Desired Beliefs
Desired Belief The water table needs to be
maintained in order for the region to sustain its
residents.
8
6. Prescription Desired Actions / Behaviors
  • 1. Institute the new plan for the water system.
  • Napa County is putting together a plan to pump
reclaimed waste water . . . to the
Milliken-Sarco-Tulocay area for vineyard and yard
    irrigation.
  • (Napa Valley Register)
  • At the very least, you will slow the further
decline in the ground water, he said.(Napa
    Valley Register)
  • 2. Limit any new building/planting permits.
  • Limited housing and vineyard expansion will help
    ensure the projects success.

A 10 million gallon water tank would be built at
Napa State as a reservoir.
9
7. Prescription Desired / Planned Outcome
  • Outcome Sustainability of the water needs and
the possible replenishing of the water table.
  • Costs Estimated cost of the project would be 50
    million dollars.
  • Extending recycled water to Coombsville could
cost in the vicinity of 50 million, Riesenberg
    said.
  • (Napa Valley Register)

10
8. Summary Conclusions
  • Despite the cost of the project, the desired
outcome is a beautiful area of Napa sustainably
    habitable for generations to come.
