Talking about festival
Dragon Boat Festival is a day to
commemorate the Chinese patriot and poet, Qu
Yuan. Falling on the fifth day of the fifth
lunar month, it is a day to remind oneself
of one's duties and obligations to the
nation. Other than eating rice dumplings and
participating in dragon boat races,
this occasion ought to be used to
commemorate the national patriots and to
emphasize the importance of loyalty and
commitment to the community.
Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday in the
United States. It is a day to commem-orate the
feast held by the Pilgrim colo-nists and members
of the native people at Plymouth in 1621. On
this day people express gratitude to God for his
blessings and give thanks to dear ones for
their love support. Feasting with family is a
most delightful part of Thanksgiving Day
celebrations and the typical food include roast
turkey, mash potatoes, stuffing, pumpkin pie,
corn, salad and etc.
The Mid-autumn Festival falls on the 15th day
of the eighth lunar month. It is an occasion for
family members to get together over
moon-cakes, fruits and fine tea and have "moon
apprecia-tion" sessions. With its association
with moon-cakes and lanterns, it is
also called Moon-cake Festival. It probably
began as a harvest festival where Chin-ese
agrarian communities celebrate and rejoice
over their harvest.
Spring Festival, also called Lunar New
Year, is the most important festival
celebrated by all Chinese around the world.
The celebration lasts from 1st of January till
15th of January on the Lunar Calendar. As
the beginning of the year, it symbolizes another
fresh start in one's life, and heralds fresh
hopes for happiness and prosperity. It is an
import- ant time to reaffirm family ties
and reunion dinners, visitations among
relatives and friends and exchange gifts these
activities serve to remind the Chinese
of the central position of the family in
the society.

Talking about festival
Halloween is a Western holiday observed on the
evening of October 31, the eve of All Saints'
Day. It is believed that the spirits of the
dead will appear on the day. People, especially
children, dressed up in strange clothes, wear
masks, ask for candies in the neighborhood
and play tricks to celebrate the holiday.
Halloween originated as a celebration connected
with evil spirits. Witches flying on
broomsticks with black cats, ghosts,
goblins (???) and skeletons have all evolved
as symbols of Halloween. Pumpkins are
also a symbol of Halloween and carving
pumpkins into jack- o-lanterns
is a Halloween custom.
Christmas is to celebrate the birth of Jesus
Christ in the Christian religion. Celebration
includes glittering light displays, the ever-
present jolly old Santa Claus, singing of
caroling, baked holiday cookies, decorations of
Christmas trees. Christmas is also a
festival to celebrate family, love, gratitude to
others and to give presents to show
appreciation. Typically, family gather
together on Christmas Eve, on Dec 24, for a
big turkey dinner, with Christmas pudding.
Games are played after the dinner. On
Christmas day, a brunch with family is the
norm, followed by some light sporting events,
such as a country walk, to digest the heavy
food.
Valentines Day is now a festival for
lovers, and people show their love by
sending cards, flowers, chocolates, or
holding parties. As one legend goes, the
festival was celebrated to the memory of
Valentine, a priest who served during the 3rd
century in Rome. When Emperor
Claudius II decided that single men made better
soldiers than those with wives and
families, he outlawed marriages for young
men his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine,
realizing the injustice of the decree,
defied Claudius and performed marriages for
young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions
were discovered, he was put to death.
Tome-sweeping Day is a time to remember the
dead and the dearly departed. It is a
period to honor and respect ones deceased
ancestors and family members. Literally
meaning clear and bright , this Chinese
festival falls in early spring, on the 106th day
after the winter solstice (??). On the day
people visit their family graves to clean up
the gravesites. Weeds are pulled, and dirt
swept away, and the family set out offerings of
food and spirit money.

Michelle to spend Thanksgiving with his family,
and then he asked to take a moment and
remember the meaning of the festival. Since
Michelle just watched a school play about the
first Thanksgiving, she told the family
something about its origin. After that all the

It is Childrens Day and Robert has one day off
from the school. We see him playing
football in the yard but it is obvious
that he is low-spirited, since he cannot find any
kid to play the game with. Very soon, Robert
gives up his game and goes home, only to find
his parents are out. Just to get himself
engaged, he decides to do something for his
parents. He cooks a meal, sets the table,
arranges some flowers in a vase and even opens a
bottle of red wine with a corkscrew. His
parents feel surprised when they come back,
seeing everything gets ready for a
wonderful dinner. But when the parents enjoy
their dinner, Robert keeps yawning, so he goes to
bed earlier than usual. Months later, Robert
goes to see his mother in the hospital, and
finds a newly- born baby. He puts a pair of
football boots in the crib as his gift to his
little brother, and feels happy now for
he will not feel lonely any longer, with a
brother to be his playmate.
