- Alcohol is a depressant, which means it slows the
function of the central nervous system. - Blocks some of the messages trying to get to the
brain altering a person's perceptions, emotions,
movement, vision, and hearing. - Alcohol is legal for ADULTS over that age of 21-
this does NOT mean it is not harmful - Alcohol gets absorbed directly into your
bloodstream and goes straight to your brain

- THC The main mind altering chemical found in
Marijuana. - Over 400 chemicals can be found in average
marijuana - 10 times more potent than the 1970s
- The Gate Way Drug Highly addictive, most
frequent users will develop a tolerance and need
more weed to get high, until ultimately looking
for a high in a stronger more addictive/dangerous
drug
15Harmful effects of Marijuana
- Impairs thinking, reading comprehension, and
verbal and mathematical skills. Research shows
that students do not remember what they have
learned when they are "high". - Thinking and reflexes are slower
- Studies show that men and women can lose the
ability to reproduce especially harmful during
adolescence - Irritates and damages the lungs
- More cancer-causing agents than is found in
tobacco smoke - Problems with memory and learning distorted
perception difficulty in thinking and
problem-solving loss of coordination and
increased heart rate, anxiety, and panic attacks.
- Critical skills related to attention, memory, and
learning are impaired among people who use
marijuana

- Effects common during the abuse of inhalants,
some of these effects remain even after use - Slowed central nervous system functions
- Speech, vision
- Lower volume of inhaled oxygen
- Severe headache
