Title: A Visit to Stone Barns

1
A Visit to Stone Barns
  • Second Grade
  • Pocantico Hills School
  • October 10, 2008

2
  • Our first visit to Stone Barns was on a
beautiful, warm, and sunny October morning. As an
introduction to sustainable farming, we began
this trip in the classroom at Stone Barns with a
discussion about farm life and the difference
between domesticated animals and those found in
    the wild.

3
  • We then headed out for a tour where we used our
senses to observe, hear and smell the crops and
animals at this time of year.

4
  • We recorded our observations in a Farm Journal
and took part in a typical farm chore
collecting eggs from the Rhode Island Reds in
    their eggmobile.

5
  • Stone Barns used to be a milk farm. Mr.
Rockefeller did not want his children to drink
pasteurized milk. He believed pasteurizing milk
took good things away from it. Today the farm is
called Stone Barns Center for Food and
    Agriculture. By William

6
  • The farmers at Stone Barns grow corn. We learned
about the three sister crops there. The three
sisters are corn, squash, and beans. The beans
grow up and around the corn. By Inez

7
  • At Stone Barns the farmers grow vegetables. In
this field they are growing arugula. It tastes
peppery and spicy. If you pick the leaves for a
salad more leaves will grow back. By Regine

8
  • You can eat peapods when you pick them or you can
cook them. There are peas inside the peapod.
Peapods grow above ground on plants. by Taijon

9
  • Cucumbers are fruits because they have seeds.
Cucumbers are small to start out then they grow
bigger. Cucumbers dont grow underground, they
    grow on vines. By Tucker

10
  • This is Barbara showing us some tomato seeds. We
learned that the squishy part inside is just to
protect the seeds. We also learned that tomatoes
and eggplants are fruit because they have seeds.
Anything that has seeds is a fruit. By Ramya

11
  • Eggplants have seeds too. The bottom of the
plants are purple. Because they have seeds,
eggplants are a fruit. Some plants dont have
    seeds. by Jonaiya

12
  • There are beautiful red flowers growing at Stone
Barns. The bees take pollen from the flowers and
spread it to other flowers. This is called
pollination. They have a bee colony at Stone
Barns and the bees make honey in the hive. By
    Jason

13
  • In this picture some bees were either sipping
nectar or moving pollen from one flower to
another. Bees use pollen to feed baby bees. By
    Athaena

14
  • Stone Barns was a milk farm. Most farms are made
out of wood but Stone Barns is made out of stone
thats why its called Stone Barns. It is an
educational center that teaches people about
    farms. By Palma

15
  • At Stone Barns we learned about chickens. These
chickens lay one egg a day but no more than five
in a week. These chickens are eating chicken
    feed. By Eva

16
  • We saw lots of hens. At the hen house we were
collecting eggs. We put them in a metal basket.
We had to be careful not to break them. By Jared

17
  • Look closely at this picture and you will see a
Bourbon Red. It is showing off for the hens. The
toms can put their feathers up the hens think
    thats cool. by Brandon

18
  • Do you like hens? I like hens. These hens are
called Rhode Island Reds. These hens are the only
ones that lay eggs. It is hard to work on a farm.
    by Frankie

19
  • Broiler chickens are the kind of chickens that
people eat. One was upside down, so Shelby had to
go in and turn him over. It was funny. By Abby

20
  • Chickens take dust baths to take off the bugs.
Chickens lay 1 egg per day and 5 in a week. Do
you know chickens peck because they are scared of
    people? By Julia

21
  • These are hens going in a hen coop. There is feed
inside and eggs are inside. It is a big job to
take care of hens but it is fun to do. I wish I
could take care of the hens. by Elizabeth

22
  • This kind of chicken is the Rhode Island Red. It
is called the Rhode Island Red because it came
from the state of Rhode Island. The chickens have
a bright red waddle under their beak. By Livia

23
  • Stone Barns has two kinds of turkeys. They are
the Broad Breasted White and the Bourbon Red. The
Bourbon Reds have some blue on their faces. By
    John

24
  • Hi, we are at Stone Barns and this is a turkey.
If a boy turkey puts his tail feathers up he
wants a girlfriend. The colors are white and
brown and red on its waddle. By Srinkhala

25
  • This is the eggmobile where the chickens lay
their eggs. They walk up a ramp to get into the
eggmobile and then lay their eggs there. The
farmers collect the eggs once a day. These
chickens are called Rhode Island Reds. By Alex

26
  • This is a Rhode Island Red chicken. They lay
their eggs in the eggmobile. The eggmobile is a
house on wheels. The chickens pecked at my
shoelaces. It was weird! by Marc

27
  • This is a sheep. The sheeps wool is used to make
woolen sweaters and other things. At Stone Barns
the sheep rotate from field to field to protect
the land from overgrazing. By Kymorah

28
  • This sheep has blue stripes on its back. That
means its ready to be eaten. Sheep make a baa
    baa sound. By Anna

29
  • Did you know that sheep have four stomachs? At
Stone Barns there is a sheep dog named Stella.
Stella guards the sheep so they are safe from
    other animals. By Shane

30
  • Pigs stay in the shade because they can get
sunburned. They are Berkshire Pigs. Some of the
early explorers brought pigs from Europe with
    them to America. By Lyndsey

31
  • The pigs need to stay in the shade. Because they
cannot sweat, they cant cool off if they get too
hot in the sun. They like to stay in their house
and sleep. Sometimes they snort when they sleep.
Their house is called a hut and it is made of
    metal. By Danny

32
  • The pigs did this to the ground. The farmers
rotate where the pigs eat so the the grass will
grow back. The pigs do not like the sun. They
like the cool because they do not sweat. They
stay in huts to keep cool. By Jarrod

33
  • We learned a lot, had a great time, and cant
wait to go back for our next visit!
