10Copy the following REMINDERS to help you study
for the test
- Chapter 14 Understand Fractions
- Parts of a fraction numerator (parts shaded)
- denominator (total number of
parts) - Equivalent Fractions
- You can use fraction bars, number lines,
multiplication, and division to help find
equivalent fractions. - To make larger fractions you can use
multiplication. You must multiply both the
numerator and denominator by the same number (it
cannot be zero). - To make smaller fractions you can use division.
You must divide both the numerator and
denominator by the same number (it
cannot be zero).
11Simplest FormA fraction is in simplest form when
the numerator and denominator have no common
factors other than 1.To find the simplest form
of a fraction, divide both the numerator and
denominator by the greatest common factor
(GCF).The GCF can be found by listing all of
the factors for the numerator and denominator and
dividing by the greatest number in common.
12Mixed Numbers / Improper FractionsMixed
Numbers made up of a whole number and a
fractionImproper Fractions a fraction in which
the numerator is greater than or equal to the
denominator.
- Changing a mixed number into an improper
fraction - 1) Multiply the denominator by the whole number
- 2) Add your product to the numerator
- 3) Your final answer (sum) becomes your numerator
- your denominator always stays the same - Changing an Improper fraction into a mixed
number - 1) Divide the denominator into the numerator
- 2) Follow the division steps and find your answer
(with remainder) - 3) The answer becomes your whole number
remainder becomes your numerator and your
denominator stays the same. - Simplify the fraction if needed.
13Chapter 15 Add / Subtract Fractions and Mixed
Numbers
- Add / Subtract Like Fractions
- Add / Subtract the numerators
- The denominator stays the same
- Tips
- If your answer is an improper fraction, you will
need to change it to a mixed number. - If your answer is not in simplest form, you will
need to find the GCF and put the fraction into
simplest form.
14Add / Subtract Mixed Numbers
- Add / Subtract the fractions
- Add / Subtract the whole numbers
- The sum / product should always be in mixed
number or fraction form (never in an improper
fraction) - Tips
- If your answer is an improper fraction, you will
need to change it to a mixed number. Dont forget
to add your mixed number to the whole answer you
have already. - If your answer is not in simplest form, you will
need to find the GCF and put the fraction into
simplest form. Make sure to include your whole
number in your final answer.
15Solve
- Tom made 1/3 of his free throws, Lil made 2/6 of
her free throws, and Maria made 4/6 of hers.
Which two people made the same part of their free
throws? -
16Solve - 2
- Sue has a set of measuring cups. Three of the
sizes are 1/2, 3/4, and 1/4 cup. How many 1/4
cup measures are equivalent to a 1/2 cup measure?
17SOLVE - 3
- Joseph fed his dogs. Brewster got 21/4 cups of
dry dog food, and Beatrice got 11/4 cups of dry
dog food. How much dry dog food was used
altogether?
18Solve - 4
