Title: Fraction Addition and Subtraction
1Whipping up some tasty Fractions!
- Fraction Addition and Subtraction
2How can I add FRACTIONS?
Hello there young mathematicians! It is I, Chef
Nemeril Pagasi. I am here today to help you learn
to add and subtract fractions with unlike
denominators!
3How do we add fractions?
Lets begin with a review!
4- Our standard for this week is
- 5.NF.1
- Add and subtract fractions with unlike
denominators (including mixed numbers) by
replacing given fractions with equivalent
fractions in such a way as to produce an
equivalent sum or difference of fractions with
like denominators. For example, 2/3 5/4 8/12
15/12 23/12. (In general, a/b c/d (ad
bc)/bd.)
5- Record these problems in your journal! Be sure
to date the page, and show all the strategies you
use to solve the problem!
6When adding 7/12 3/12, why do you add the
numerators but keep the denominator the same?
7The difference of two fractions is ¾. What
could the fractions be? Try to come up with more
than 1 set of answers!
8 How do you know that 2 1/2 3 2/3 gt 6?
9Show the sum of ? ? using a number line?
10Use the digits 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, and 9 to form two
different mixed numbers with a difference between
1 and 2.
11Two fractions less than 1 result in a sum of 1 ?.
What could the fractions be?
12Can you explain to me WHY we can not add
fractions with unlike denominators without first
changing the denominators? Can you relate
fractions to real world problem?
