Our Sun, the Star
  • By Melanie Long

2
The Sun
  • The Sun, Is a star.
  • It is not the biggest star..
  • Presently, the suns supply of hydrogen, is being
    used up.
  • The suns distance, from Earth, is150,000,000
    kilometres away.
  • It weighs more than 300,000 times than Earth.
  • The sun is a huge ball of gas.

About the sun
  • Shooting up from the Sun, there are rose
coloured streamers of glowing gas. They are
called Solar Prominences. Some of them shoot up
more than 240,000 km from the suns surface.
  • The sun has a Halo around it, this is called the
suns corona. - It is visible on a solar eclipse.

5
The Star
  • Stars are massive glowing balls of hot gases,
made up of HYDROGEN AND HELIUM.
  • A star twinkles/sparkles because its light is
bent and scattered by our atmosphere.

6
  • Life of a Star
  • Molecular Cloud
  • ProtoStar
  • Red Giant
  • Planetary Nebular Super-Nova
  • leaving behind a
  • White Dwarf Neutron Star Blackhole

7
Fusion
  • 1 - 41/1H -4/2 2e 1 2v 4.3 X10 -12 J
  • 4 Hydrogen nucleai join to form a single Helium
nucleus, releasing 2 positrons. 2 neutrinos and
    some Energy.
  • 3 4/3 He - 12/6 C Y radiation 1.2 x 10-12 J
  • In red giants, fusion of Helium to Carbon tripl
    -alpa reaction
  • 12/6 C 4/2 He - 16/8 ) Y
  • Super Giants, carbon can fuse with Helium to form
    Oxygen.
  • White dwarfs have no nuclear fusions

8
Solar winds
  • The coronal magnetic field, in the surface of the
sun, is strong enough to trap hot, gaseous
    coronal material in large loops.
  • Further away from the sun, the magnetic field is
weaker, which meansthe coronal gas can push
themagnetic field for a great distance in the
    solar system.
  • The flow that is constantly flowing is called
    Solar wind.

9
Sunspots
  • 11 year cycle.
  • giant magnetic disturbances which affect weather
    and radio transmissions on Earth.
  • The solar storms, known as sunspots, appear
sometimes several times larger than Earth.
  • temperatures of the sunspots is at least
1000degrees celcius- lower then the surrounding
    surface.
