Background High voltage insulators are a key
component of every high voltage network. Recent
research shows that high electric fields at the
insulator surface can damage the insulator sheath
and cause failure. Aim This project aims to use
computational techniques to investigate the
effectiveness of corona rings in reducing the
electric field on the insulator surface. It also
aims to model the electric field on current
insulators in use in the Queensland 330 kV
network and compare different insulators and
corona rings. Results The effectiveness of
corona rings depends on their placement,
diameter, shape and insulator end-fitting. Also,
the rings used currently on insulators in the
Queensland 330 kV system are adequate. Conclusion
The optimum size and placement corona rings
cannot be generalized completely. Modeling
should be done for every different configuration.
