Transport for London can contribute to improved
health in London in two main ways
- By enabling the population of London to lead
fuller, more productive and therefore healthier
lives - By reducing the negative impacts of the transport
system on health.

- To promote healthier modes of travel
- To provide access to jobs, facilities and
amenities, particularly key health services - To reduce the emission of pollutants that
contribute to ill-health - To improve transport safety, especially reducing
road traffic accidents and fatalities - To assess the health impacts of projects.
- Promoting walking and cycling
- Interchange initiatives
- Developing new light rail schemes
- Travel awareness campaigns
- Improving the bus network
- Promoting sustainable distribution

7Actions to Promote Healthier Modes of Transport
- Carrying out a review of walking, cycling and
area-based schemes - Developing a walking plan
- Developing a cycling action plan.
8Actions to Improve Access to Jobs, Facilities
and Amenities, Particularly Key Health Services
- Carrying out research on socially excluded groups
- Preparing a social inclusion action plan
- Improving door-door transport services
- Reviewing access to hospitals in the congestion
charging zone.
9Actions to Reduce Emission of Pollutants that
Contribute to Ill-health
- Reducing bus emissions
- Including an emission target in the London
service permit - Including 100 per cent discount for alternative
fuel vehicles in central London congestion - Increasing use of water-diesel emulsion fuel
- Investigating the potential and feasibility of
fuel cell buses - Investigating taxi/phv emissions issues
- Developing and implement traffic management
measures to help reduce emissions - Improving traffic flow through the streetworks
task force - Working with boroughs on air quality issues
