Title: Chapter 2 Its Alive Or, Is It
1Chapter 2 Its Alive!! Or, Is It?
2What are the characteristics of Living things???
- 1. Living things have cells
- A cell is a membrane-covered
- Structure that contains all the
- Materials necessary for life
- 2. Living things sense and respond to change
- A stimulus is a change in the
- Organisms environment which
- Affects the activity of the organism
3What is Homeostasis??
- Homeostasis the maintenance of a stable
internal environment.. An organisms happy
place if you will
43. Living things reproduce
- Asexual reproduction a single parent produces
identical offspring. Ex) bacteria - Sexual reproduction two parents produce
offspring which share characteristics of both
parents. Ex) people
54. Living things have DNA
- What is DNA? Deoxyribonucleic Acid is a special
molecule which has all of the instructions for
making the proteins that comprise our bodies. - This DNA is the basis of heredity. (the
transmission of characteristics from one
generation to the next)
65. Living Things use Energy
- Our metabolism is the total of all of the
chemical activities that we perform. - Probably a high
- Metabolism!!!
7Living Things Grow and Develop
- We grow by making new cells, not by making our
current cells bigger.
8The Simple Bare Necessities of Life
- Food producers, consumers, and decomposers all
play different roles. - Water Almost 70 of our cells are water.
- Air A mixture of gases which is necessary for
many chemical processes - A place to Live habitat and shelter are
necessities for all living things.
9Producer, consumer, or decomposer??
10The Chemistry of Life all living things are
made of cells, but what are cells made of?
- 1. Proteins large molecules
- which make up amino acids
- Carbohydrates compounds
- made of sugars
- Lipids compounds that cannot
- mix with water. Phospholipids are molecules
which make up the cell membrane.
11Nucleic Acids the Cells Fuel
- N.Acids compounds made up of subunits called
nucleotides. These N. Acids make up our DNA - ATP the major fuel used for all cell
activities. We make ATP from the foods that we
eat. It is like our gasoline
