Title: Is the state still powerful

1
Is the state still powerful?
2
YES!
  • In many ways, more is expected of the state today
    than ever before.
  • Economics, social justice, law, etc.
  • Despite even Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher,
there is a broad consensus that the state should
be involved in many areas of our life.
  • Third Way government services delegated to
some private companies, market rules for
    government programs, etc.
  • Still, the buck stops at the state.

3
More Detailed Descriptions, terms to know
  • Government as a producer role 1
  • Public Policy role 2 Extraction of resources,
distribution, regulation of human behavior, and
    symbolic policies
  • Nightwatchman State- regulation at preserving
law, order, and commerce. Protection too.
  • Police State- more regulation and more extraction
    of resources.
  • Junta Government of military rulers.
  • Father knows best state regulation, much with
personal liberty too, ie NOT Amsterdam
  • Crony Capitalism Government allows private
business, but private business usually has
friends in high places. Chicago on a large
    scale.
  • Petrol State States with lots of energy
natural resources ironically tend to have more
problems. The government uses the state oil
wealth to favor favorites and expand its reach.
Nigeria, Venezuela, Russia, and much of the
Middle East have this curse of oil.
  • Welfare state lots of distribution, many times
government in the economy in a more serious way.
  • More effective, more participation, more
    legitimacy.

4
Other Labels for State Power
Parliamentary Democracy the most common way to
do things.
5
  • Presidential Democracy some of the states we
will study, although less common overall.

6
Federal? Elections?
7
Is the state still powerful? It aint 1914 anymore
  • Isolation these days is almost impossible
  • Nation-States find it difficult to achieve best
    alone
  • More nation-states than ever before complicate
the world. Huntingtons third wave of
    democratization.
  • Federation vs. Confederation vs. International
    Organization.
  • Democratic Peace Theory, Nuclear Peace theory
(because I dont know where else to put these
    things).

8
International Organizations
  • Domains 1 Regional, 2 Continental, 3
    International
  • Purposes Economic (OPEC, IMF, WTO),
    Military(NATO, Warsaw Pact), Cultural (The
    Commonwealth of Nations), Multi-dimensional (The
    UN, EU, African Union)

Observations
  • Ironically the increased internationalization may
make it more possible, not less, for smaller
states to survive. Jihad v. McWorld
  • Many nation-states breaking up into smaller
    sub-units
  • States even necessary? Al Qaeda and NGOs exert
power around the world without being states.
  • Canada. Spain. Russia. Czech Republic. Slovakia.
    Yugoslavia. Serbia. China?
