Abstract I will describe the ingredients which
are sufficient to build a universal quantum
computer as well as some of the difficulties
(decoherence) which stand in the way of a
physical realization. There are currently three
methods proposed to mitigate the effects of
decoherence. I will summarize these methods and
describe my contribution toward understanding the
performance of quantum error correction in the
presence of correlated noise sources
