  • Set clear behavioural codes and ensure they are
    operated consistently.
  • Set short-term targets and make it clear exactly
    what has to be done to succeed.
  • Set open-ended questions and tasks but provide a
    semi-structured work frame and provide high
    minimum requirements.
  • Give plenty of positive feedback on work and
    participation.
  • Promote self-esteem encourage boys they need
    more encouragement.
  • Use a wide variety of teaching and learning
    styles, those that are kinaesthetic, spatial, and
    conceptual.
  • Tap into the competitiveness of boys and set
    challenges!

What Parents Can Do to Support their Sons
  • Ask questions about their learning, show interest
    in what they have been doing at school - ask
    about what they have learnt.
  • Help establish a culture where it is OK to work
    well and succeed.
  • Check their HwK Diary show boys you are
    interested in what they are doing.
  • Support school, emphasising its importance,
    working in partnership.
  • Help them get organised and equipped.

  • Provide a specific space for work that is
    undertaken at home.
  • Monitor the use of the PC or have the PC were you
    can see it!
  • Consider boys use of leisure time.
  • Challenge stereotypes.
  • Link boys achievements with positive role models
    outside the school environment.

  • Read with year 7 and 8 boys and encourage reading
    as much as possible.
  • Continue to learn about the issue and how to
    tackle it.

  • Become the talker as well as the doer!
  • Forget what others think of you!
  • Concentrate on your learning
  • Give yourself time to analyse be reflective!
  • Ask for help
  • Understand that we all make mistakes!
