Title: Personality Summary

1
Personality Summary
  • The unique characteristics of an individual
  • No particular personality is suited for a
    particular sport
  • Knowledge about personality is important to
    ensure optimum performance
  • For example, a coach or teacher who knows what an
individual is like in different situations, will
know how to deal with that individual and to get
    the best out of them.

2
Stable vs Neurotic
  • Stable
  • Behaviour is predictable
  • For example, a golfer who has an even temperament
    in most situations.
  • Neurotic
  • Behaviour is unpredictable, often involving mood
    swings
  • For example, a soccer player who tends to fly off
the handle if things are not going well.

3
Trait Approach
  • Innate Characteristics
  • Enduring characteristics that individuals take to
    all situations.
  • The work of Eysenck and Cattell

4
Social Learning
  • Behaviour is learned from others that are
    significant
  • The work of Bandura
  • A soccer player might learn on the field
behaviour (diving to obtain a penalty, or
exhibitionism after scoring) from observing top
    players.

5
Interactionist
  • A mixture of trait and social learning
  • B f (p.e)
  • Behaviour is a result of the interaction of
    personality traits and the environment
  • For example a Hockey player may be an introvert
after the game but reveals extrovert qualities
    during the game

6
Extroversion and Introversion
  • Extroversion
  • Affiliates to other people
  • Seeks out social situations
  • Example a Rugby player who likes to socialise
    after a game
  • Introversion
  • Avoids social situations
  • Example a Basketball player who sits quietly
after the game and seems very shy.

7
Type A Type B
  • Type A
  • High levels of stress, this person lacks patience
  • Example, a gymnast who seems very anxious in most
    situations
  • Type B
  • More relaxed, this person has low personal
    stress.
  • Example, a Volleyballer who tends to be calm in
    most situations and seems unflappable.

8
Personality Measurement
  • Interviews
  • Questionnaires
  • Observation
  • Can reveal the characteristics of an individual
  • Care is needed, because the characteristics
revealed may not be those revealed in a full game
    or competitive situation.

9
Research tells us!!
  • Although not definitive it does seem that sports
people tend to show traits of extroversion,
    dominance, enthusiasm, confidence, aggression and
    high activity levels.(Butt 1987)
  • There is no personality profile which can
discriminate athletes from non athletes. Although
there is a relationship between athletic success
and mental health. Suggesting that athletes have
a more positive mental health profile.

10
Research tells us !! continued
  • There is evidence to suggest a relationship
between psychological well being and regular
    exercise participation.

11
Homework
  • Read and Make notes on Self concept
  • Revise for Test!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
