Title: FORT VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY Energy and Energy Measurement

1
FORT VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITYEnergy and Energy
Measurement
  • Anthony Marks Jr. Research Apprentice,
  • Ray Williams, Upward Bound Program
  • Dr. Curtis Borne, Professor of Ag. Ed.
  • September 2003

2
Objectives (QCC 175, 180, 182)
  • 1. Identify the various types of energy sources.
  • 2. Compute the quantity of energy used in
    agriculture applications.
  • 3. Measure the energy produced from various
    sources

3
Energy is the ability to do work.
  • . Work can be defined as the transfer of
energy as the result of motion and is measured in
joules. Acceleration is the rate of change in
velocity and is represented by M/S2 . A force is
the push or pull one body exerts on another and
    is measured in newtons.
  • A. Note One (1) Newton 1 KG x 1 Meter/seconds2
or the force needed to move 1 KG x 1
    Meter/seconds2.
  • B. Force (F) Mass (M) x Acceleration (A)

4
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT
  • Calculator, Yo-Yo, paddle ball, miniature
tractor, battery charger, stop watch, and tape
    measure.

5
DEMONSTRATION WITH PADDLE BALL
  • Measure distance ball falls from paddle.-50.5 cm
  • Weigh the ball.-8.86 grams
  • Time the ball from paddle to end of cord.-.32
    seconds
  • Calculate the amount of work in joules.

6
W(work)F(force) x D(distance traveled)
  • F.009x.51/.322
  • F. 009x .51/.102
  • F. 009x 5
  • F.045 newtons

7
ACTIVITY/EXPERIMENTS WITH ENERGY, FORCE, AND
WORK. WITH YO-YO
  • Measure string on Yo-Yo.-41 centimeters
  • Weigh the Yo-Yo.-48.5grams
  • Time fall of the Yo-Yo from hand to end of
    string.-.81 seconds
  • Calculate the force on the Yo-Yo.

8
F(force)M(mass)xA(acceleration
  • F.049x.41/.812
  • F.049x.41/.66
  • F.049x.62
  • F.03 newtons

9
Activity/Experiments with energy force and work
  • Build Track.
  • Make model mini-tractor.
  • Connect battery charger to track.
  • Measure the distance the tractor moved.-1 meter
  • Weigh the tractor.-380.35 grams
  • Time movement of tractor.-1.25 seconds
  • Calculate force of the tractor.

10
FM x A
  • F.38x1/1.252
  • F.38x1/1.56
  • F.38x.64
  • F.24 newtons
