2As they approached the village to which they were
going, Jesus acted as if he were going
further. But they urged him strongly, Stay with
us for it is nearly evening the day is almost
over. So he went in to stay with them.

4When he was at the table with them, he took
bread, gave thanks, broke it, and began to give
it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they
recognised him, and he disappeared from their
sight.
5Then the two told what had happened on the
way and how Jesus was recognised by them when he
broke the bread.
6Who are these men? Cleopas and one
other. Cleopas Clopas Alphaeus Husband of
the other Mary Brother of Joseph Jesus paternal
uncle and his son Simeon successor to James as
leader of the church in Jerusalem or maybe Luke
himself?

This is the bread of affliction which our
forefathers ate in the land of Egypt. Whosoever
is hungry let him come and eat. Whosoever is in
need let him keep the Passover with us. This
year we keep it here, next year in the land of
Israel. This year as slaves, next year as free.

characteristic gesture? A recognition that some
