Title: Who is Jesus (part 2)

1
Who is Jesus (part 2)
  • The miracles of Jesus
  • Does science prohibit miracles? No, scientific
laws are only formed assuming that natural laws
are always the same ( thus miracles are not
happening) when scientific observations are being
    made.
  • Historically, the Christian belief in the
rationality of the natural world as created by
God led to the success of science.
  • Many great scientists e.g Newton, Galileo,
    Copernicus Faraday were Christians who
    considered scientific investigation as thinking
    Gods thoughts after him.
  • Scientists must be governed by the observed data
of the natural world in forming theories just as
we should all be governed by Gods revelation of
himself in scripture if we wish to know what he
is like (rather than our own speculations or
    imagination!)

Some Miracles of Jesus
  • Raising Jairus daughter from the dead
  • Even though Jesus has performed a tremendous
miracle he asks them to tell no-one about it.
  • There were so many witnesses of other miracles,
that his opponents claimed he did them by the
power of Beelzebub (prince of devils) rather than
    by Gods power.
  • Calming the storm
  • What type of man is this, that even the winds
and waves obey Him? Contrast King Canute the
Great in 1020s who failed to turn back the tide
    of the Atlantic Oceon.
  • Jesus criticises the disciples lack of faith
he was with them in the boat.

3
Jesuss miracles continued
  • Casting out evil spirits from the man named
    Legion
  • The evil spirits recognise Jesus.
  • Jesus casting them into the swine shows that the
man was not just suffering from a psychological
    or mental disorder.
  • Exorcism is practiced in the church today by
some set apart for this demanding ministry but it
is a task needing special care.
  • Feeding the 5000
  • The problem with this miracle is that some might
then just follow Jesus for free food.
  • Giving sight to the blind man
  • His faith enabled his cure. Healing was
practiced by the early Church (see Acts of the
Apostles) and is by Christians today.

Who did Jesus say He was? - I am sayings
  • "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will
never go hungry, and he who believes in me will
never be thirsty. I am the living bread that
came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this
    bread, he will live forever.
  • "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me
will never walk in darkness, but will have the
    light of life."
  • "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays
down his life for the sheep. I am the gate
whoever enters through me will be saved.
  • "I am the resurrection and the life. He who
believes in me will live, even though he dies
and whoever lives and believes in me will never
    die.
  • "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one
comes to the Father except through me.
  • I am the true vine, and my Father is the
gardener. I am the vine you are the branches.
If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear
much fruit apart from me you can do nothing.

Jesus as God Incarnate
  • In the past God spoke to our forefathers through
the prophets at many times and in various ways,
but in these last days he has spoken to us by his
Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and
through whom he made the universe. The Son is the
radiance of God's glory and the exact
representation of his being, sustaining all
    things by his powerful word.
  • Who, being in very nature God, did not consider
equality with God something to be grasped, but
made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a
servant, being made in human likeness. And being
found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself
and became obedient to death -even death on a
    cross!

6
Jesus as God Incarnate
  • Today in the town of David a Savior has been
born to you he is Christ the Lord. This will be
a sign to you You will find a baby wrapped in
cloths and lying in a manger."
  • He was in the world, and though the world was
made through him, the world did not recognize
him. He came to that which was his own, but his
own did not receive him. Yet to all who received
him, to those who believed in his name, he gave
the right to become children of God - children
born not of natural descent, nor of human
decision or a husband's will, but born of God.

7
Conclusions
  • Jesus performed many astounding miracles even
raising people from the dead. Could a mere man do
    these?
  • Jesus made quite astounding claims about himself
including that he was the Light of the World, the
Way, the Truth and the Life and the Resurrection
and the Life. Far beyond anything a man could
    claim.
  • Jesus was born in a manger amongst animals and
was visited there by shepherds a suitable
beginning to life for Son of God? If we were
God, we might have planned a grander entrance to
    Earth life for our Son!
