2What is EndNote
UTSLIBRARY
- Software package that allows you to store and
organise your references - EndNote allows you to transfer references into a
Word document and automatically creates a
bibliography - You can choose from a wide variety of reference
styles and easily change between styles

5Getting the software
- Buy EndNote 7 (Windows) or EndNote 8 (Macintosh)
on CD from UTS Library for 20 - OR download the program from the Librarys web
page (UTS email password required)The download
is free but is over 35MB and will take hours to
download unless via broadband. - http//www.lib.uts.edu.au/information/endnote/dow
nload - Tutorial is based on EndNote version 7 for PC.
The MAC version isessentially the same.
6- Create an EndNote library
After opening EndNote select Create a new EndNote
library
7We have named the library thesis Click on Save
Existing libraries can also be opened from
the File - open menu bar.
82. Type references into the thesis library

Click yellow icon to create a new reference in
your library
9Select your reference type from the drop down
menu. When you are finished typing in the fields,
close the window, and your reference is now saved
into the thesis library
10Highlight your reference and select a style from
the drop Down window
To view the highlighted reference in your
selected style, click on Show preview or Hide
preview

After selecting a library catalogue click on
Connect
Connection files allow you to download book
citations from other library catalogues.
12Choose Title Field, not Any Field, for searching
a library catalogue
13Highlight the title you wish to transfer into
your thesis library. Open the Copy 1 reference To
window and choose your library (thesis.enl)
14The book citation be will transferred into your
thesis library. Before closing double click on
the record and check that all fields are correct.
15When finished close the Connected to and Search
windows.

You can search within any field in your thesis
library. Tip, use the notes field in the record
for your personal notes. You can then retrieve
these records through the search function.
