  • Identify relevant scientific literature
  • Acquire in-depth knowledge on the topic
  • Present a scientific paper to your peers
  • Critically evaluate and discuss scientific data
  • Develop skills for writing your literature review
  • Module dates Wed 2nd Nov 2011 (2-4 pm)
  • Mon 7th Nov 2011 9-5 pm (?)

Content
  • Factual Information that can be referenced
  • Should cover entire scope of your study
  • Conflicting arguments should be equally weighted
    and discussed its a review so be balanced!
  • You may express an evaluated opinion on
    controversial data after full discussion of the
    literature
  • Beware of journal envy (positive or negative)

  • Your Supervisor
  • Your colleagues (other PhD/MSc students!)
  • Pubmed (NCBI)/Medline
  • www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov
  • Primary research papers
  • Other reviews (be careful, maybe 2 or 3)
  • Library e-journals
  • Books OK, but always out of date
  • Websites Be Very Careful! Best avoided

Structure
  • Relevant to your research area
  • Introduction background sets the scene why
    important? (How did this get funded?)
  • Body contains the detail - use sections to keep
    it clear (progressively more complex?)
  • A picture is better than a thousand words use
    your own Figures. Can rely on .jpg, .tiff, .pdf
  • Finish with a conclusion/Summary to round it of
    take home message should be strong
  • Link your research into this if possible ie pose
    a question, or make clear what isnt known

Figures
  • Actively encouraged bare minimum of 3
  • Graphs Pictures Diagrams etc.
  • YOUR OWN
  • Colour is best, but be sensible!
  • Dont make text too small to read.
  • Legends describe what is in the figure -
    exempt from the word count!
  • If it is not yours you must reference it!
  • Try and construct a summary figure

Practicalities 1
  • 4000 word limit flexible (20-30 pages)
  • Use 12 point font (e.g. Arial)
  • Spacing at 1.5 lines
  • Inset figures in a box that also contains the
    legend. Use insert command
  • Include a Title page (Must include DDP number,
    supervisor, department, registration number)

  • Break into sections for each subject area keeps
    a good structure
  • Include a Contents page
  • Include Abbreviations (looks good too)
  • Use the headings tool in MS Word for this
  • Get it bound together nicely
  • Hand it in on time
  • Get most of it done by Christmas

  • References must be done using a reference
    manager. End note or end note
  • Use Author date to help the marker validate your
    references easily
  • Bibliography in Alphabetical order
  • References are not included in the word count-so
    no excuses please
