• Extensible HTML
• Powerful and flexible
• Data in page can be used by other programs
• Page can be more user-friendly
• Keeps language features of regular HTML

The Real World

• Small percentage of users still use old browsers
• CSS and XHTML not clean in those
• But we cant wait forever
• One option is to write code so that
• Looks very good in modern browsers
• Looks OK in old browsers
