4With the fall of the Iron Curtain, now more than
ten years ago, new perspectives suddenly arose
not only for the former communist countries in
the East, but for the whole of Europe. However,
it was soon realised that in order to foster the
idea of a united Europe a mutual understanding of
all nations was indispensable. The students of
the EUROPEAN BUSINESS SCHOOL did not just want to
talk about European integration, but strive
actively for that idea. Thus the student
association Students for Europe (sfe) was founded
in 1991. It is our goal to unite young people
from all over Europe in order to get to know each
other, to live the spirit of a united Europe and
to shape the future structure of this continent
that we are going to live in and that we are once
supposed to lead.

5Driven by this vision, the first European
Students' Congress was organised in the city of
Prague in 1991. Young people from all European
countries took part in this congress to exchange
their ideas and experiences on an international
stage. The positive feedback of everybody
involved proved the value of such an event and
the interest of young people in the future of
their continent. In the years that followed,
congresses where successfully organised once a
year in mayor cities all across Europe. Each
year, a growing number of committed young
Europeans enjoyed the lectures, work-shops and
discussions as well as getting together with
fellow Europeans. Each time, the congresses
are also shaped by a large number of skilled and
committed lectures, great Europeans holding
important positions in society, politics or
economy, who share their inside with all
participants and provide the background
information needed for the discussions.

7For the first time in the history of
SFE-congresses, the 12th European Students
Congress will take place in Germany and be
connected with another unique event, the Model
European Council. Hereby, participants will
immediately be given the possibility to make use
of the knowledge and the inside that they gained
through the congress by participating in the
role-plays of the MEC. Hence, the concept of
the 12th European Students Congress itself will
not be altered. As in previous years, it will
consist of interesting lectures from politicians,
scientists and businessmen from all over Europe
as well as work-shops and discussions. In order
to give the participants an idea of the cultural
variety in Europe, the congress will also include
cultural events and excursions. As an example,
well visit the city of Frankfurt, not only home
to the European Central bank and the financial
heart of central Europe but also a city of art,
culture and savoir-vivre.

12Public is a political student association at the
EUROPEAN BUSINESS SCHOOL. However, it is not
related to any political party whatsoever, but is
open for all students interested in politics and
eager to learn more about it. The work of
public does include weekly discussions about
current political topics as well as the
Rheingauer Kontakte, a series of lectures with
important personalities from politics and
society. In recent years, many well-known names
like Wim Duisenberg, Hans-Dietrich Genscher oder
Friedrich Merz could be added to the long list of
lecturers. Once a year public does also organise
the Model European Council (MEC), a simulation of
the European Council of Ministers. During this
role-play, every participant does represent a
European country as a minister but never his or
her own country. Then, in various councils,
topics like the EU enlargement, EU foreign and
security policy or a common constitution will be
discussed. The conclusions reached during these
discussions will then be presented to the General
Assembly and sent to the European Parliament.

13About the MEC Model European Council a
European Future  A simple thought to start with
No matter what our nationality might be our
future will be European. It is this simple idea
that will determine our personal future and that
of our friends and relatives. However, we must
also realise that we are still miles away from a
common European House. Â Europe is not as easy
as it might appear. Politicians meet for a couple
of days to negotiate about reforms, voting
rights, institutions, enlargement issues and many
more. The ordinary driving force of European
developments is the pressure to come up with
solutions for the most urgent or current
problems. Yet, the driving force in the
development of our continent should be another
one the question of a true European vision. The
question how we want Europe to be, where we want
Europe to be in the next decades. The Model
European Council (MEC) has devoted itself to be
an active part of this development.
Model European Council

14Debating current issues of European interest,
negotiating solutions and drafting resolutions
has been an excellent opportunity to see and feel
the complexity of a European decision making
process and the variety of the issues. It gave us
a good feeling of how Europe currently makes its
way. Even more important, nevertheless, is the
MEC philosophy that enables us to learn about
Europe, its challenges, its potential and its
vast opportunities to be one of the most
important factors for our personal future. And it
is the MEC spirit that allows us to experience
what Europe can mean for ourselves benefiting
from cultural diversity and getting to know the
uniqueness of different cultures. The past events
at the EUROPEAN BUSINESS SCHOOL (ebs), hosting
the MEC for four times, have proven a true
interest of young people to experience Europe, to
think and learn about it. The fun that the
participants had, the concentration and huge
efforts of the delegates during a great number of
council and committee sessions, and the smile on
their faces when meeting European friends will
continuously motivate the student association
public to organise the next Model European
Council. And would be our great pleasure to see
many of you at the fifth MEC! Â

15This year, for the first time, the Model European
Council will be organised in connection with the
12th European Students Congress. Students
participating in both events will therefore have
the opportunity to use their inside gained during
the Students Congress during the discussions and
negotiations of the Model European Council.
Both events will take place at Schloss
Reichartshausen, seat of the EUROPEAN BUSINESS
SCHOOL, beautifully situated among the vineyards
of the Rhine valley, only 40 kilometres west of
Frankfurt. The participation fee for the Model
European Council is 40. This includes hotel or
youth hostel as well as meals and drinks.
However, together with the European Students
Congress, participation will only amount to 120
for the whole week and also include all
excursions. For applications, please turn to
our homepage www.model-european-council.com and
use the online application form.
