Childhood
  • In 1820 Harriet Tubman was born a slave in
    Maryland.
  • When she was twelve, an overseer hit her in the
    head with a heavy weight.
  • As a result she had a condition, where she slept
    a great deal of time, her whole life. It is
    called narcolepsy.

Adulthood
  • At age 25, she married John Tubman who was a free
    African American.
  • She was afraid she was going to be sold south
    and, therefore, she ran away.

Her escape
  • She escaped through the Underground Railroad.
  • It was a network of safe houses which were called
    depots and stations.
  • The owners were called station masters and were
    often Quakers or free African Americans.
  • The people who led the slaves were called
    conductors.
  • They used codes to find their way
  • north. These codes were often
  • songs.

As a free woman
  • She wanted to free her family, so she returned to
    Maryland.
  • She freed her parents, her brother, her sister,
    her sisters children, and two other slaves.
  • She went back again to free her husband who had
    already remarried by the time she arrived.
  • After this, she became determined to help people.
  • She later married Nelson David, who was a Union
    soldier.

As a conductor
  • She made 19 trips in which she successfully freed
    300 slaves.
  • She carried a gun and threatened those who wanted
    to go back.
  • She was called Moses because she led her people
    from slavery.

Bounty Hunter Reward
  • Bounty hunters would get a 40,000 if they caught
    Harriet and brought her to the authorities.
  • They failed every time.

Influential People
  • She met many abolitionists.
  • She became friends with John Brown, Frederick
    Douglas, and Senator William H. Seward.

After the Underground Railroad
  • She worked for the Union Army during the Civil
    War.
  • She was a nurse, spy, and cook.
  • After the war, she returned to her home.

Her Death
  • She died in March 10, 1913 when she was 93 years
    old.
  • She received many honors and awards after her
    death.
  • A ship was named after her the Liberty Ship of
    Harriet Tubman.
  • The government issued a postage stamp in her
    honor.
