Specific Features of the CA Region

• Microfinance scene is dominated by downscaling
  commercial banks and NGO MFIs
• 17 commercial banks realizing EBRDs micro and
  small business projects
• NGO MFIs serving the majority of CA
  microentrepreneurs
• CA MFIs are the youngest among all sub-regions
  (average of 3 years and 8 months)

Scale

• Average MFI in CA has 3,300 active clients
• The smallest MFI served less than 100 clients and
  the largest over 32,000 clients
• Half of the NGO MFIs had fewer than 500 borrowers
• CA MFIs have on average the smallest and most
  diversified size of loan portfolio compared to
  other sub-regions

Outreach

• Though the average loan size is not high, the
  depth of outreach is shallow (148 compared to
  116 in the whole ECA region)
• The depth of outreach was most diversified among
  sub-regions for 11 NGO MFIs, the depth of
  outreach was more than 100, reaching as high as
  620 at the same time, for 10 MFIs it did not
  exceed 50
• NGO MFIs predominantly serve rural clients 73
  of borrowers lived outside towns
• 10 of the gross loan portfolio of NGO MFIs was
  invested in agricultural loan products

Changes and Innovations

• CA NGO MFIs fall behind MFIs in other sub-regions
  in regard to institutional changes introduced in
  the past 2 years
• In nearly every category surveyed, they had the
  lowest percentage of MFIs introducing changes
• The situation will change in the future
• Majority plans to introduce new loan products
• Significant number of MFIs plan to introduce BDS
