Facts Figures on Women

• On average in Britain, women working full time
  earn 20 less per hour than men 40 less if
  they work part time
• Women are under-represented in public life and
  decision-making. Only 18 of MPs and 1 out of
  100 Chief Executives of the top 100 public
  companies are females

• In this country 1 in 4 women are affected
  by domestic violence

• The picture for women is even more unequal on a
  global scale. Women carry out around two thirds
  of the worlds work for less than 5 of its
  income, and own only 1 of its property

What is International Womens Day?

• It is on 8th March
• A day for asserting womens political and social
  rights
• Celebration of womens contributions to society
• A day to raise awareness of womens work
• It was born in 1909 following protests by
  American women workers in the textiles industry,
  against sweatshops and child labour
• It was first celebrated in Britain in 1926 and
  the day was officially recognised by the UN in
  1977
