Title: Electrical Wiring Lab: Switch and Lights
1Electrical Wiring Lab Switch and Lights
Mr. Grandersons 9th Physical Science
class. Southwest Junior High School
2Background Info
It is important to know the plan for
each electrical activity. At right is the plan
for Hooking up a switch and light. Ours
looks the same but we added extra lights by
daisy-chaining (passing connections on to the
next light). A review of basic electrical rules
is needed. A few pointers -the circuit should
flow in a loop from the source (on black wire)
through the switch and lights and back out on the
white wire. -black wires are hot and carry
the current to the devices, white is neutral and
carries power away. The bare wire is the
ground wire a safety device.
3Collect Materials and Tools
We will need check that tools are in working
order and everyone knows how to use the stuff.
4Materials
- -light bulb -switches
- -wire -plug-ins
- -Hammer -wire nuts
- -drill -screw driver
- -Switch boxes -Circuit Tester
- -Junction Boxes -wire strippers
5Layout Design
Power comes into the circuit from wire to the
left on the black wire, and returns back out on
the white wire. Connections should be made
as shown, with white wires connect- ed together,
black wires to the switch, and light wires
connected to the appropriate colored
screws. Ground wires should be grounded to the
boxes. Notice that the electricitys path (AC is
a bit different than it appears), can be thought
of as flowing in on the black wire, thru the
switch (can turn off) to the light on the black
wire, and back out on the white wire connection.
We decided to add additional lights!

7Put in switch box and Junction boxes
8Wires are now Run to the proper Location. Bravo,
everyone!
9Next, Run wires to boxes
..and 3rd light.
Connected to 1st light

Electricity flows in on black

1
Carries electr. to 2nd light.
Elect. flows out on white wire
White wires are connected allowing electricity
to leave
Electr.flows thru switch on black wires.
10Connections
- Black wire is hot (to gold screw)
- White wire is neutral to silver screw.
- Bare copper is ground to green screw.
11Make Connections
Chris and Clayton set up boxes
Melanie getting a head start on covers
12Install Switch in box
NOTE CONNECTIONS
13Install lights on Junction Boxes
White wire to silver screw
Light wiring The right way to connect one light
to the next.
Black wire to gold screw
Ground wire to box
14Check all wiring connections
- Are they safe, good connections?
- Do they make sense for their use?
- Is there a clear path for electricity to follow?
- Are all hot wires to the device black and all
return wires white? - Are hot connections to gold screws and neutral
connections to silver screws?
15TEST!
Testing hookups done by Mr. G onlyonce the
device is checked and connected to power, were
Ready to run it. Future electricians, anyone?
