The Vikings

Where did the Vikings come from ??
  • Well at first we really want to know where the
Vikings came from. They came from Scandinavia but
you and I would probably know Scandinavia as
Sweden, Norway and Denmark. To your right is a
map of Scandinavia with the following countries
in it Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Great Britain
is in the blue just below the Norway sign.

Who were the Vikings ??
  • The Vikings were farmers. When the farmer died
the farm was passed to the oldest son in the
    family.
  • The Vikings had a lot of children! This meant
that there were a lot of people which had to
choose between being workers on their brother's
farm or going over the seas in search of fame,
fortune or new land. Stories about how easy it
was to get rich on such expeditions spread like
    wild fire over Scandinavia.
  • Some quotes that the Vikings from Norway and
    Sweden had said were
  • Norway-There's not enough room on the farm for
all of us. Let's sail westwards and discover some
new land for ourselves... sharpen the swords.
  • Sweden-We're not working for our brother.
  • There's new land and riches to the east ...
let's go and trade there ... it's a better way
    than fighting.

Viking Houses
  • Most people lived in farms. There houses were
made out of wood, stone or blocks of turf. The
roofs were either thatched or they were made out
    of turf.
  • Jorvik which is also know as York was an
important town in Viking Britain. Its houses were
built of wood or wattle, crowded close together
    along narrow streets.
  • To your right is a picture of a house that a
    Viking would have lived in.

5
Sagas
  • The Vikings wrote SAGAS. The SAGAS that they
wrote were about there heros and there gods.
  • In class I wrote a SAGA about the Mighty Thor and
it was about him trying to lift the giant cat in
front of the giant but he couldnt do it because
he was standing on the ice and he was slipping
all over the place . At the end after Thor had
tried to lift the mighty cat he would have been
exhausted and he would probably have felt
embraced because he always boasted about his
strength and at that time he couldnt show it .

6
Lindisfarne
  • In the year 793 the attack took place on
Lindisfarne. The attack was for the Vikings to
kill all of the monks or at least the majority of
them and they did that. It was a terrible thing
the attack on Lindisfarne because it involved a
lot of killings and a lot of the monks were taken
as slaves. The Vikings didnt just kill the monks
they took all of there belongings and they burned
the Monastery down. A picture is below to show
    the remains of the Monastery.

7
Viking Travel
  • When the Vikings were living they didnt have
cars or motorbikes or anything like what we have
today so when they were alive they had to travel
in boats or by foot. The boats were called
Longships and they had very elegant designs on
them. To your right are some pictures of
    Longships.

8
Longships
  • Longships were the boats the Vikings travelled in
. If you had a lot of money and you could afford
a large ship it would usually be about 25 metres
in length . The large ships could hold around
about 60 warriors and at each side of the ship
there would be holes in case the wind was going
in the opposite direction the Vikings were going
in. If that was the case they would have to row.

9
Viking Gods and Goddesses
  • Some of the Gods are
  • Aegir- God of the seashore or the ocean.
  • Balder-God of light.
  • Eir-Goddess of healing.
  • Jord-Goddess of Earth. Mother of Thor and Frigg.
  • Oden- Father of the Gods.
  • Thor- Strongest of the Gods.

10
Viking Clothes
  • Men wore a long woollen shirt and long cloth
trousers which were held up by a sash or a
    drawstring.
  • Ladies wore a long linen dress. It could be
either plain or pleated. Over the dress they wore
a long woollen tunic. A tunic is like an apron.
