Parents apprehension of childrens health and
oral health By Lena Hosseinzadeh Karolinska
Institute
2
  • During 2005 we did a study about why dental care
    had
  • attracted so much attention in the media and
    who the
  • driving force was.
  • Every year Colgate runs a campaign where they
  • emphasize dental problems of currents interest.

3
  • During 2004 their campaign was focused on
    childrens
  • oral health, where a CD-rom was distributed to
    parents
  • with advice and instructions.
  • Shortly after this campaingn many articles were
  • published where they emphasized problems
    concerning
  • childrens oral and also the unhealthy food
    consumption
  • that has lead to many diseases such as obesity
    and
  • diabetes.

4
  • After the investigation we found out that the
responsible parties for all this attention was
the Swedish dental federation and also the
government, who had given a task to the health
institute of Sweden to come upp with an
actionplan to improve food habits and increase
fysical activity among the swedish population.

5
  • EDSA Project
  • For this project we have chosen to do a
    pilotstudy
  • among parents with children in years 3-5. We
    chose to
  • distribute the surveys to two schools, one in a
    swedish
  • area and one school where the majority were
    foreigners.
  • We have written an introduction for the survey
    giving
  • background information and explaining the
    purpose of
  • it. We also mentioned in the introduction that
    this is a
  • pilotstudy.

6
  • EDSA Project
  • The survey is divided into four sections
  • - General information about the parent
  • - Dental health
  • - Food Habits
  • - Common diseases
  • Every section is divided into questions,
    followed by
  • some information regarding the question.

7
Results
  • 45 surveys out of 80 were filled in from
  • Spånga elemantary school.
  • Only 12 surveys were filled in and returned
  • from Husby elemantary school.

8
Results General Information

The questions asked in this area was to
get a general view about the parents dental
care, how often they go to the dentist and so
on. Also questions about the mothers and
fathers birthcountry, job and education were
to be answered.

Discussion
  • The main disappointment with this study was the
    fact
  • that the number of surveys handed in from
    Husby
  • elemantary school didnt measure up to what
    was
  • expected.
  • The 12 that was handed in was not
  • sufficient enough to make the study
    comparable
  • between the two schools and also to take the
    social
  • aspect between the two areas into
    consideration as
  • planned.

20
Discussion
  • But since this is a pilotstudy and errors are
  • always likely to occur, the study had to still
  • be compiled and the reason for the errors
  • investigated.
  • As the results has shown there were some
  • differences in the answers given
  • depending on which area the parents
  • came from.

21
Discussion
  • From Spånga the majority of parents came
  • from Sweden, had studied at University
  • and had good jobs.
  • From Husby the majority were foreigners,
  • and not many of them had more than a
  • high school diploma.

22
Discussion
  • Parents in Husby and other areas with
  • many foreigners are not so well aquainted with
  • the swedish language. They often seek help
    from
  • their children when filling out forms and etc.
  • So one main issue in this study is the swedish
  • language. The majority of the parents in Husby
  • found this study too hard to answer, although
    the
  • level of the language was held at a normal
    level.

23
Discussion
  • The eating habits are similiar in both groups,
    but
  • when stated that the children drank soda or
    juice
  • when they were thirsty, non of the products
    used were light.
  • When asking about flouride and how its provided
    to
  • us daily, all five alternatives were correct,
    but the
  • highest percentage fell on toothpaste and
    flouride
  • pastilles. The parents also knew that a high
    intake of
  • flouride is harmful, but not that it causes
    Flourosis and can be toxic.

24
Discussion
  • Most parents didnt help their children brush
  • their teeth, although they follow them to
  • the dentist and follow the instructions
  • given to them.
  • Asking about obesity, in Husby most
  • parents didnt know the word but half of
  • them knew the definition.

25
Discussion
  • At Spånga 90 of the parents had heard
  • about obesity but only half of them knew
  • the definition.
  • To conclude Its is always good to start with a
    pilot,
  • becasue things that seem obvious to us, is
    not as
  • obvious to others. It was interesting that
    parents in
  • the swedish area didnt find the study as
    instructive
  • as they did in Husby, without knowing the
    answers
  • to the questions they answered wrong
