8Intertidal Zone Monitoring Plan
- Indicator Species
- e.g. shore birds, blue mussel, harbor seal
- Students Community Involvement
- e.g. work/study positions, volunteer programs
- Monitoring Techniques
- e.g. Photo Monitoring
- we use photographs, where we go out and
photograph the same plot every spring and every
fall to look at the changes in the abundance and
the distribution and the size of the mussels and
barnacles , of the major algae, the kelps that
growthat allows us to gather a lot of
information in a short period of time. Then we
can bring those photographs into the laboratory

19Designing Efficiently
http//asknature.org/product/49269092db17515de04ac

- Tubercle wind turbine technologies
- (inspired by humpback whale fins)
- Based on BIOMIMICRY approach
- Ask Nature

20Solar Energy
- Prism Solar Technologies
- Green Roofs- work in conjunction with solar
panels - Fenestration
- 25 - 85 less silicon used in glass solar panels
http//www.cs.uleth.ca/vpak/spring2006/groc3710/p
ics/turbines.jpg
- Glass Solar Panel designed by Prism Solar
Technologies
21Solar Panels Work Most Efficiently with Green
Roofs
- Standard temperature for solar panels is 70 F
- Green roofs reduce roof temperature to an avg. 70
F
22Basic green roof design
23Chicago City Hall (33,000 sq. ft.)
24World Trade Center, Boston, MA Roofscapes, Inc.
25Why we need Green Roofs at UMB
- Reduce storm water runoff
- Improve air quality
- Reduce the urban heat island effect
- Increase biodiversity
- Reduce energy costs
- Noise insulation
- Extended roof life
- Improve aesthetics
- Education benefits
- Earn LEED points
26Environmentally Friendly Building Materials
- New Construction of 3 academic buildings
- Local company for demolition e.g. Costello
Dismantling - Re-use concrete blocks and brick
- Hingham Shipyard- current env. friendly building
project in Boston
27Interior Features
- High efficiency water fixtures
- Can reduce water use by up to 50
- Infrared Lavatory sinks
- Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs
- Allows for a more natural lighting effect
- Occupancy Sensors for lighting control
- Used in classrooms and laboratories
- Can reduce electricity use by around 50 in
optimal conditions
www.powerhousemuseum.com/.../img/flush.jpg
- Dual flush toilet (exist for last 25 years) can
save around 18,000 gallons of water/year for
household
28Flooring possibilities
