October 10, 2008, New York, NY French-based
Mezzo TV and Barking Dogs Productions present The
JazzMix Festival, to be held in New York from
November 18-25, 2008. The project will capture
eight live jazz concerts in eight different clubs
to show the incredible inventiveness of the
New-York musical scene for eight different
26-minute films for Mezzo TV.  From hip-hop to
electro, through big band or abstract music, jazz
constantly digs in other musical styles in order
to rebuild itself. Shot in and around well known
New York City jazz haunts, the film will
concentrate on eight outstanding musicians
Val-Inc, Ambrose Akinmusire, Jason Lindner, Chris
Dave, Jaleel Shaw, Theo Bleckman, Vijay Iyer and
Nasheet Waits - and their prospective musical
projects, hand-picked specifically for this film.
 These musicians, who link tradition and
modernity, will be recorded in HD by a crew with
a dynamic musical sense and real artistic vision
- eager to share their love of music with a wider
audience. The artists, their musicians, and their
audience will be interviewed for these films, to
be shown as part of an eight-episode series, in
the hopes of broadening their audiences when the
film will be shown throughout Europe on Mezzo
TV. The final cut of the footage will,
represent a snapshot of this new expressivity of
our age's jazz portraits of musicians or bands
who represent the new jazz scene. The teams
objective for the festival in this series is to
capture the artists when they're still
approachable, in New-York clubs where theyve
always been playing, in the firmament of their
art, says Artistic Director Reza
Ackbaraly. Director Olivier Taïebs mission is
to engrave in HD the works of these musicians as
diamonds in a case, in the dimension of its
content. His team includes Sound Engineer Martin
Descombels and Artistic Director, Reza Ackbaraly,
programmer for Mezzo TV and the JazzMix scene
program at the Jazz à Vienne Festival, the
Belgrade Jazz Festival and soon in the Estonia
Festival.

November 18 Val Inc / Marvin Sewell / Jowee
Omicil at the DromVal-Inc percussion,
turntables, Marvin Sewell guitar, Jowee Omicil
- reedsHaitian electronic music
composer/percussionist/turntablist, Val-Inc
evokes the musical esoteric realms of the
creative subconscious and self defined as
'Afro-Electronica.' Her work invites the Lwas as
she incorporates her African Haitian Musical
traditions into the present and beyond, combining
acoustics with electronics and the archaic with
the post-modern. She works with a diverse array
of artists like Steve Coleman as a
turntablist/composer, Tracie D. Morris as a
percussionist and Anthony Braxton as a recording
engineer. Her solo 'Afro-Electronica'
installations have been showcased in New York
City at the Whitney Museum, the Museum of Modern
Art, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Village
Vanguard and internationally at SaalFelden Music
Festival in Austria, Stanser Musiktage in
Switzerland, Jazz a la Villette in France, and
the Biennale di Venezia Museum in Italy. Val-Inc
will be joined by guitarist Marvin Sewell, a
composer with the versatility and talent who has
played with Cassandra Wilson, Jack  DeJohnette
and  Lila Downs. Reed man Jowee Omicil is a
saxophonist/educator/composer, whos groovy
soulful sound will complete the trio.Wednesday
November 19 Ambrose Akinmusire Quartet at the
Jazz StandardAmbrose Akinmusire trumpet,
Walter Smith III - tenor sax, Fabian Almazan
piano, Harish Raghavan bass, Justin Brown -
drumsAmbrose Akinmusire was born and raised in
Oakland California. Before he was eighteen,
Ambrose had already performed with such famed
musicians as saxophonists Joe Henderson, Joshua
Redman, Steve Coleman, and drummer Billy Higgins.
Ambrose is a 2007 graduate of the Masters program
at University of Southern California, and also
the Monk Institute of Jazz, Ambroses instructors
include Terence Blanchard, Billy Childs and Gary
Grant. In the past year, he has worked with such
artists as saxophonist Jimmy Heath, pianist Jason
Moran, trombonist Hal Crook, Bob Hurst, drummer
Terri Lyne Carrington, bassist Ron Carter,
trumpeter Wallace Roney, pianist Herbie Hancock
and saxophonist Wayne Shorter. In 2007 Akinmusire
won two of the most prestigious jazz competitions
in the world, the Thelonious Monk International
Jazz Competition (the panel of judges included
trumpeters Quincy Jones, Herb Alpert, Terence
Blanchard, Hugh Masekela, Clark Terry and Roy
Hargrove following the semi-finals of the
competition that was held at Schoenberg Hall on
the University of California, Los Angeles Campus)
and the Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet
Solo Competition (International Trumpet Guild
(ITG) and the Herb Alpert Foundation sponsor this
bi-annual event, held at the University of
Arizona, Tucson, Arizona).

Thursday November 20 The Jason Lindner Big Band

Lindner grew up in Brooklyn, NY, and started
playing piano by ear at an early age. In Music
and Art High School in Manhattan Jason formed
lasting ties with musical collaboratives like
drummer/recording engineer Daniel Freedman (Third
World Love) and saxophonist Myron Walden (Brian
Blade Fellowship). Soon he would find his two
most important gurus. He apprenticed with Barry
Harris (taking the place of what would have been
his early college years), and then briefly with
Chris Anderson (Herbie Hancock's harmonic guru).
Jason soon was playing piano locally in Latin
dance bands and playing weekly at the University
Of The Streets' singers' open mike/workshop.
Today Jason Lindner is an integral, vital part of
many exciting bands and projects, including
Meshell Ndegeocello's current working band,
Claudia Acuña (longtime musical director and
pianist), Dafnis Prieto's Absolute Quintet (in
his current band and on his Grammy nominated
recording Absolute Quintet), on trumpeter
Avishai Cohen's new recording (After The Big
Rain, Anzic), also featuring Blue Note recording
artist Lionel Loueke. Friday November 21
Chris Dave friends featuring Bilal at The Hip
Hop Cultural Center of HarlemMusicians
TBDHaving blessed the scene for over 10 years
with his unique musical styling, Chris Daves
musicianship defies classification and places him
among the drum-world's best. His articulated
beats, intrinsic rhythms and innovative
inflections have gained him recognition as one of
the most influential and prototypical drummers in
the industry today. Chris has been around the
world and back playing for and recording with
some of music's most established and iconic
artists. Along with the many high-profile acts
Chris is currently involved with such as Erykah
Badu, Maxwell, and Mos Def, he is producing and
releasing a highly anticipated fresh mixtape of
tracks that the in-demand hip-hop drummer
produced with live instrumentation. This mixtape
features an audible range of progressive hip-hop
with a stunning juxtaposition of ambient
electronic sounds against oppressive and
authoritative drum grooves, for which Dave is
known. It also showcases the range of Dave's
dynamic collaborators in hip-hop, RB, jazz and
neo-soul.

Saturday November 22 Jaleel Shaw Quartet at the
Jazz GalleryJaleel Shaw alto, Aaron Goldberg -
piano, Justin Faulkner - drums, Ben Williams -
bassUpon graduating from high school, Jaleel
Shaw received a full tuition scholarship to
Berklee College of Music in Boston, Mass. While
attending Berklee, he received the Billboard
Endowed Scholarship for Outstanding Academic and
Musical achievement (1998), two Woodwind Dept.
Chair Awards, The Outstanding Student Teacher
Award, and The Boston Jazz Society Award (1999).
Upon graduating from Berklee, Jaleel received a
scholarship to attend the Manhattan School of
Music in New York City, He was also a finalist in
the Thelonious Monk International Saxophone
Competition that year. Jaleel has performed
internationally in Australia, China, London,
Paris, Italy, Finland, Africa, Scotland,
Amsterdam, Austria, Spain, and Portugal, as well
as many cities in the U.S. He can be heard on
recent recordings from the Roy Haynes Quartet,
Mingus Big Band, The Either Orchestra, The Count
Basie Big Band, and Jeremy Pelt Quartet. He
recorded his first Perspective for the Fresh
Sound in February of 2004. The CD was released in
2005 and was proclaimed one of the top debut
albums of that year by All About Jazz

Kneebody at Joes Pub Theo Bleckmann vocals

vocals, Nate Wood - drumsIn the summer of 2007,
Theo Bleckmann and Kneebody collaborated to
create a concert of music based on the song
cycles of American composer Charles Ives. They
were invited by Kent Nagano to the Munich
Festpiel to debut the performance - it was a
great success. All of the songs were adapted and
arranged by Theo and Kneebody - they have been
completely re-contextualized and involve elements
of jazz, electronica and more. As a result of
that first performance they have been asked to
record the music for the respected German label
Winter and Winter. This will be the first
performance in the states since the debut. Genre
-bending, -skipping and -skirting vocalist and
composer, Theo Bleckmann has been a steady force
in the music scene in New York for over 15 years.
He has performed worldwide on with artists like
Laurie Anderson, Anthony Braxton, Steve Coleman,
Dave Douglas, John Hollenbeck, Sheila Jordan, Ben
Monder, Meredith Monk, Michael Tilson Thomas,
Bang On A Can All-stars and John Zorn.  Kneebody
represents the state of the art in genre-bending
postmodern creative music. On stage, the band
combines sophisticated instrumental compositions
and virtuosic improvising, never failing to
astonish even the most discerning ears. Kneebody
effortlessly blends seemingly limitless
influences (from Hendrix and Aphex Twin to Reich
and Ellington) into a cohesive voice at once
singular and familiar. Kneebody is a Los
Angeles/New York-based quintet featuring present
and former members of Dave Douglas' Keystone
Band, Ignacio Berroa, Ani Difranco, Snoop Dogg,
Dakah, Steve Coleman, Ravi Coltrane, Daedelus and
more.

Monday November 24 Fieldwork at Poisson
RougeVijay Iyer piano, Steve Lehman alto,
Tyshawn Sorey - drumsFIELDWORK is a cooperative
band made up of some of the best players in
modern experimental jazz. The group includes
Vijay Iyer on piano, Steve Lehman on alto
saxophone and Tyshawn Sorey on drums, and the
trio produces dense, knotty improvisations that
are complex but never overly stuffy or boring.
The music retains its excitement despite being
dark, ominous and complicated. There is a lot of
mystery and pent up emotion in between the notes
that keeps the music constantly engaging and
interesting. This is heady stuff from talented
musicians, and the music is very exciting to

Burton tenorNew York neighborhood friends
since childhood played off-the-cuff themes and
rhythms that sounded like the meeting place
between John Coltranes port-wine ballads and his
later, intense music. They were coordinated and
methodical and proceeded in waves. (Ben Ratliff,
NY Times)Nasheet Waits, drummer/music educator,
is a New York native. His interest in playing the
drums was encouraged by his father, legendary
percussionist, Freddy Waits. Nasheet has been a
member of Andrew Hills various bands, Jason
Morans Bandwagon, and The Fred Hersch Trio. As
an originating member of Bandwagon, Jason,
bassist Tarus Mateen, and Nasheet have been
deemed, the most exciting rhythm section in jazz
by JazzTimes. Their 2001 recording Black
Stars, featured Sam Rivers was named Best CD of
2001 (JazzTimes, 1/02) and The New York Times.
Nasheets recording and performing discography is
a veritable whos who in Jazz, boasting stints
with jazz notables such as Geri Allen, Mario
Bauza, Hamiett Bluiett, Abraham Burton, Ron
Carter, Marc Cary, Steve Coleman, Stanley Cowell,
Orrin Evans, Stefon Harris, Andrew Hill, Bill
Lee, Jackie McLean, The Mingus Big Band, The New
Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Greg Osby, Joshua
Redman, Vanessa Rubin, Antoine Roney, Wallace
Roney, Jacky Terrason, Bunky Green, and Mark
Turner. Waits has recorded and toured extensively
in Africa, Europe, Japan, Canada, South America
