2Mosta is a town located in central Malta,
occupying an area of 6.8km2 and around 19,200
inhabitants, making it one of the largest towns
on the island. Mosta is very famous for its
Dome, the church of Santa Marija Assunta, also
known as Rotunda church that has a huge dome. The
surroundings of Mosta are fertile agricultural
land and the villages of Naxxar, Rabat, Burmarrad
and Lija

15The Mosta Dome was built in 1860 over another
church that was built in 1614. The Rotunda was
designed by Giorgio Grognet de Vassé, a French
citizen resident in Mosta. Mosta residents, at
that time totaling not more than 1500, built the
church. It took them 27 years to complete and
resulted in a major attraction

33On 9 April 1942, the church was nearly destroyed
during World War II. An Axis bomb hit the dome of
the church but failed to explode. All the 300
people attending morning mass were left unharmed.
The detonator was removed and a replica bomb is
now displayed as a memorial

the tourists is the feast of Saint Mary the
