2The Boats of Malta - The Art of the Fishermen
sets out to record one of the major art forms of
the Maltese Islands - the painted fishing boats.
Each boat is a work of art. It would function
just as well if it were painted an overall grey,
but instead it displays a complex pattern of
bright colours. Each boat has a unique pattern of
colours and yet it remains unmistakably Maltese.
Studying the complex variations of these colours
reveals that each boat-owner is not only a
practical fisherman but also an artist

have evolved into a symbol of Maltese tradition,
seafaring culture and resilience.

28The two eyes at the front of the boat are
referred to as the Eye of Horus or of Osiris, and
they are a symbol of protection, good health, and
said to protect the fisherman while they were at
sea.

31Throughout different cultures in the world the
symbol of the eye has very different meanings.
32Maltese culture has always reserved space for the
superstitious. One particular superstitious
aspect was, and is somewhat still present in
Maltese culture. That is the Evil Eye.

35Its thought that the eyes may have been the
modern survival of an ancient Phoenician custom
used by the ancient Greeks and Egyptians.

37The boats are made with timber and were designed
specifically for the Mediterranean Sea. The
Mediterranean Sea isnt like the Atlantic and
Pacific Ocean the waves are high but short due
to there not being much wind to create long
waves. This meant they had to build the boats
differently to cope with these conditions.

41Interestingly the belief in Gozo is somewhat
different. Supposedly Gozitans believed that the
eyes animated the boats. This gave them a life of
their own and a sense of self-guidance on the
seas.
