dressed in red appeared and asked the local lord
to build a pagoda in order to control the
subterranean forces and dominate the region. The
first true pagoda was built between 1553 and

The Pagoda of the Celestial Lady (Chua Thien Mu
Pagoda) is a historic temple in the city of Hue
in Vietnam. Its iconic seven-story pagoda is
regarded as the unofficial symbol of the city,
and the temple has often been the subject of folk
rhymes and ca dao about Hue The pagoda sits on
the Ha Khe hill, around 5 kilometres from the
Citadel of Hue constructed by the Nguyen Dynasty
and sits on the northern bank of the Perfume River

The 21m-high octagonal tower, Thap Phuoc Duyen,
was constructed under the reign of Emperor Thieu
Tri in 1844. Each of its storeys is dedicated to
a manushi-buddha (a Buddha that appeared in human
form).

To the left of the tower is a six-sided
pavilion, sheltering an enormous bell (1710),
weighing 2052kg and audible from 10km away

19th century as a universal symbol of Buddhism

The temple itself is a humble building in the
inner courtyard, past the triple-gated entrance
where three statues of Buddhist guardians stand
at the alert. In the main sanctuary behind the
bronze laughing Buddha are three statues A Di
Da, the Buddha of the Past Thich Ca, the
historical Buddha (Sakyamuni) and Di Lac Buddha,
the Buddha of the Future.

The Perfume River (Vietnamese Huong Giang) is a
river that crosses the capital city of Hue, in
the central Vietnam. Hu? is a province capital in
central Vietnam and was the state capital from
1738 to 1775 and of the Nguyen Dynasty from 1802
to 1945. The city functioned as the
administrative capital of the protectorate of
Annam during the French Indochina period and
contains one of the few UNESCO designated sites
in Vietnam
