Title: Parkinson's Disease Stem Cell Treatment
1Parkinson's Disease Stem Cell Treatment
2How Can You Know if You Have Parkinsons Disease
(PD)?
Slowed overall movement Difficulty speaking
Difficulty writing Loss of automatic
motions (characterised by the inability to blink,
smile, or execute typical body language
activities) (making everyday tasks more time
consuming) Muscle tenseness Shaking or
tremors
3Symptoms of Parkinson's Disease
- Difficulty speaking
- Difficulty writing
- Loss of automatic movements (Characterized by the
inability to blink, smile or perform common body
language practices) - Slowed overall movement (making everyday tasks
more time consuming) - Muscle stiffness
- Tremors or shaking
4The Method of Therapy
Scientists will take iPSCs from healthy
individuals, match them with patients, and then
stimulate the cells to become dopaminergic
progenitors as part of the treatment. These
progenitors will subsequently be injected into
the "putamen," a brain area believed to play a
key role in the neuronal degeneration associated
with Parkinson's disease. Over 5 million cells
will be implanted in patients and allowed to grow
into neurons. These neurons can replenish the
dopamine that is lost as a result of Parkinson's
disease.
