What are Stem Cell?
  • A stem cell is a blank cell/ precursor cell that
can give rise to multiple tissue types such as
    skin, muscle, or nerve cell.
  • A stem cell is essentially the building block of
    the human body.
  • Stem cells are observed in the embryo, fetal and
adult stage of a persons life.
  • Sources of Stem Cells
  • ESCs are extracted from inner cell mass of
    blastocyst.
  • iPSCs are derived through adult somatic cells.
  • ASCs are found in cord blood, bone marrow, blood,
    intestine, liver, pancreas etc.

Kinds of Stem Cells
Stem cell type Description Examples
Totipotent Each cell can develop into a new individual Cells from early (1-3 days) embryos
Pluripotent Cells capable of giving rise to different cell types. Some cells of blastocyst (5 to 14 days)
Multipotent Cells differentiated, but can form a number of other tissues Fetal tissue, cord blood, and adult stem cells

Features of Stem Cells
  • Stem Cells are very unique cells.
  • Stem Cells have the amazing ability to develop
into several distinct cell types in the body.
  • Stem Cells can be used as a repair system for the
    body.
  • Stem Cells can theoretically divide without limit
in a living organism in order to replenish
    various types of cells.
  • When a stem cell divides, each new cell has the
potential to either remain a stem cell or become
another type of cell with a more specialized
function (i.e. a muscle cell, a red blood cell, a
    brain cell, etc.).

Stem Cell Treatment
  • Stem cell therapy involves the use of stem cells
for the treatment of a disease or to overcome a
    chronic condition.
  • Stem cell Therapy for various Diseases
    treatment
  • Parkinsons disease
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Amyotrophic lateral Sclerosis
  • Diabetes
  • Bone defects
  • Osteoarthritis

Challenges of Stem Cell Therapy
  • The emergence of stem cells has brought new light
    to the disease.
  • Stem cells used in cellular assays and animal
models have achieved promising results, still
there are hurdles during its clinical
    applications.
  • Stem cells appear to be an ideal solution for
medicine, still there are many obstacles that
need to be overcome in the future.
  • One of the most important problem is ethical
    concern with Stem Cell Therapy

Future Perspectives
  • The mechanism of stem cells should completely
justify animal models. For global acceptance of
    the procedure.
  • The future of stem cell research and therapy will
continue to provide novel avenues of diagnostics,
    therapeutics, and tissue regeneration.

Conclusions
  • Stem cell therapy is becoming a magnificent area
    for medicine.
  • Untreated neurodegenerative diseases have shown
the possibility of cure with stem cell therapy.
  • Induced pluripotency enables the use of a
    patients own cells.
  • Tissue banks are source of regenerative medicine
to combat against present and future chronic
    diseases.
  • Stem cell therapy and all its regenerative
benefits are helping prolong human life.
