Class explanation
  • Here are some common words that writers can use
    to unite sentences.
  • Let's read the following words together.
  • Time order conjunctions
  • After
  • Before
  • As soon as
  • Until
  • When
  • Whenever
  • While

You actually use those terms when you speak, so
today we're going to focus on how to use them
correctly when you are writing.

Examples
  • The earthquake of 1906 shook California.
  • San Francisco burned down for three days.
  • After the earthquake in California in 1906, San
    Francisco burned down for three days.
  • San Francisco burned down for three days after
    the earthquake in California in 1906.

Why should we use these conjunctions?
  • They develop the order of events clear to
    everybody.
  • They permit writing flow and sound less jerky.
  • They give writing sound additional elegance.
  • 4. They offer you another form of sentence to
    put in your writing, and employing a style of
    sentence structures that will work as an
    attention grabber for the readers.
  • 5. They produce style and tone.

Example
  • This morning the alarm went off. I jumped out of
    bed. I quickly brushed my teeth. I had a sandwich
    for breakfast. I hopped on the bus. I took off to
    my college.
  • After using the connector
  • When the alarm went off, I got out of bed. After
    I brushed my teeth, I had breakfast. I hopped on
    the bus, and I took off to my college.

Assignment 1
  • After and Before
  • Join sentences with after and before to show the
    order of events. Use a comma when they begin the
    sentence.
  • Put after right in front of the thing that
    happened first.
  • The game ended.
  • We went home.
  • After the game ended, we went home.
  • We went home after the game ended.

Before 
  • Put before right in front of the thing that
    happened second.
  • I left the house.
  • I ate breakfast
  • Before I left the house, I ate breakfast.
  • I ate breakfast before I left the house.

  • I looked outside.
  • I saw it was snowing.
  • When I looked outside, I saw it was snowing.
  • I saw it was snowing when I looked outside.
  • Use when to show that something happened at a
    certain moment.

Whenever
  • Use whenever to show something always happens.
  • I go to the mall.
  • I get a cinnamon roll.
  • Whenever I go to the mall, I get a cinnamon roll.
  • I get a cinnamon roll whenever I go to the mall.

While
  • Use while for two things that happen at the same
    time.
  • I was walking to school.
  • I stepped in gum.
  • While I was walking to school, I stepped in gum.
  • I stepped in gum while I was walking to school.

As soon as
  • Combine sentences with joining words that show
    the timing or order of events.
  • Review
  • 1. Begin a sentence with the joining word. Put a
    comma between the sentences.
  • 2. Put the joining word in the middle of the
    sentence. Don't use a comma.
  • 1. The song ended.
  • Everyone cheered loudly
  • As soon as the song ended, everyone cheered
    loudly.
  • 2. The song ended.
  • Everyone cheered loudly.
  • Everyone cheered loudly as soon as the song
    ended.

Until
  • Begin the sentence with until. Put a comma
    between the sentences.
  • Until' shows uncertainty about WHEN a certain
    thing will happen.
  • Until you ask, I will not tell means' I will tell
    only when you ask.
  • My father stirred the fire 
  • The flames leaped high and the sparks flew out
    the grill.
  • Until my father stirred the fire, the flame
    leaped high and the sparks flew out the grill.
